Depends if there's a 'popular' music round or not.

Do you say the answers out loud? If not they don't count.

About the same as you. I have scored a 16 but there were more questions in my fields of science And medicine.

I once got 11.

I can't remember the details as I was in full shock by the end.

Between my wife and I, we are soundly beaten every week. Maybe 5-10 questions right. Anything into double figures is a moral victory, anything over 15 is bragging rights for at least a month.

Probably half a dozen on average.

I find I either get all the 3 questions after the starter right, or none of them.

hugely dependant - if I was playing properly not many, because I'd bottle buzzing in early on a load of the starters for ten and then miss out on way more of the bonus questions. Just answering with no penalty for guessing and being wrong - IDK, about 20%? The subjects are just so wide.

Mastermind OTOH. I'd win that from what I've seen 😉

(probably about 70% of general knowledge, and who knows on the specialist subject. I assume that's negotiated with the production team, so you have a subject that's suitably wide but not too difficult. I mean, Smiths lyrics I'd get 100%, but they probably wouldn't let me have that as a subject)

About the same as you I reckon, on a bad day just a couple, on average 5-10, any more than that is exceptional.

Anyway, UnivChal is child's play, Only Connect is the real deal.

Used to play it with my partner a football scoring style as we were not the highest goal scorers, maybe a 4-3 or just a 3-2 and an occasional 5-0

I once recorded the show and trounced her by 8-1 could have been much higher but I didn't want to be rumbled, it caused a riot and a major huff until I come clean and told the truth

The question needs a more granular reponse I reckon - how many starters do you get and how many bonuses.

I reckon I get about 2 starters a week correct and ahead of the buzz of the teams. And probably 2-3 others correct after they have buzzed but before they have answered.

And then 5-6 bonus Qs.

Although when it gets past the second ronud probably fewer as the questions definitely get harder as it progresses.

Mastermind OTOH. I’d win that from what I’ve seen

I’ve applied for next year…

You submit 5 specialist subjects, then if you are picked, they negotiate the depth of the questions. ‘Shakespeare’ is too broad, but ‘Othello’ is too specific. It has to be more than one piece of work generally.

A few subjects are off limits, as they’ve run out of questions, fawlty towers, father Ted etc.

Only Connect is the real deal.

GF made me watch this the other week, I got the connection in one of the Qs - but the contestants said the answer before I could.

I'm terrible at cryptic crosswords though.

For clarification. My scores are just answering a question correctly. 1 point per question.

And answer before them..well shout out anyway.

Mastermind: General Knowledge is easy just sitting in your living room...or drawing-room.

Tipping Point is where it's truly at. TV Game of the Gods! 😉

I'm impressed by UC contestants' speed and how much they know at a third/half my age. But I did think I knew everything back then and only now realise I manifestly know bugger all.
One of my son's mates was on not that long ago and even he did okay. It's v rare I'll watch an entire episode and I'm never as good as I should be given my life should be reasonable prep, but probably some way into low double figures I hope. Don't like questions about classical Greece and Rome, history generally, advanced maths, industrial processes. Most things come to think of it. At least they don't do much sport.
Anyway, our week hinges on doing the Guardian weekend quiz on a Saturday morning/lunchtime. Usually get a handful wrong.

I rarely get any. If I do, it's often something which has stumped both teams.

Only Connect on the other hand I'm pretty good at. We pause the Connecting Wall so that we can try to work it out before the teams blurt out spoilers.

The 1% Club also, I reckon I'd stand a decent chance of actually winning that. If I got as far as the 1% question I'd bottle and decline, but I have got a few of them over the course of its run.

Amal Rajan is the quizmaster

It's Amol, and he's a bell end of the highest order.

Can't watch it any more because of his smug little face.

6 is a good score for me. I spend too much time being fascinated by the amazing names, clothing style, and wondering how I am the only one that see's the resembalance of serial killers in a large number of the contestants. We had Jeff D and Buffalo Bill last Monday.

Actually quite a lot of them, I always feel quite smug about that.

But as someone said above there's no penalty for guessing wrong. Also I've not got the pressure of a TV camera on me and i'm playing both team's bonuses so have more opportunities to be right about something.

I was on my University's team for it back in the day (2002/3?) I wouldn't have got as many at that age amd we didn't get through to the televised rounds anyway so clearly not as good as I think I am!

Quite often I don't actually understand the question.
If there are popular music questions and subjects such as nature or the environment then I can score a decent 5/6, but normally it's a poor 3.
My other half seems to blurt out most of the answers and does quite well.

I like Amol - he's very jolly, however I've noticed that there are a lot more questions on Indian cuisine and cricket, of which he's almost an expert, maybe he's had some input, who knows.

Just for clarity, I haven't seen him on UC but I couldn't stand him when he was BBC media editor.

He took over the Media Show from the excellent Steve Hewlett (RIP) and made it all about him, with an annoyingly smarmy and self-regarding interview style.

Maybe he's found his purpose as a TV presenter.

I never really understand UC. Loads of questions about some Classic text no one has read or classical music etc and then it gets into a science round and it's like GCSE level. Makes no sense to me, rarely watch it.

Me too. Paxo was just dialling it in by the time he finished, Amol has brought a bit of energy.

They're all easy when you know them, but for some of us GCSE was a long time ago and coming up quickly with the right term for I dunno

In cytogenetics, what term describes the entire chromosomal complement of a cell which may be observed during mitotic metaphase?

I'd honestly say I've probably slightly more than lay level knowledge of this stuff now, and still have vague grasp of principles mitosis/meiosis. And will go "ah yeah" when I hear the answer. Coming up with it at quiz speed is another matter. (And bear in mind it's on telly to entertain, not to fairly assess academic ability.)

Amol has brought a bit of energy.

Indeed. The speed, and clarity, that he dished out the questions towards the end (setting up a tiebreak) last night was pretty impressive.

There are a few that never answer a single question maybe there just to make up the numbers and always have that "I dunno" glazed look over their face wearing a tank top their dad wore in the 1970's with COVID self cut haircut while the exasperated swotty captain looks at them knowing the question just asked was all about the degree they are looking to get

🙂

And there are the ones who have to take a satisfied drink of water after answering a question.

I get about 5-10 each time, often educated guesses rather than actually knowing. Sometimes I'll come up with a correct answer that I have no idea how I know.

Not as many as the people playing usually. I don't know what kind of education some of those barely 20 somethings received, but judging by their esoteric knowledge of some high culture, pretty different to mine. I usually mouthbreath 'how the **** did they know that' at least once per show.

That's totally fair enough, sorry for jumping in two-footed.
It did feel like Paxo had perhaps gone on for a decade longer than necessary.

Paxo should come back for the Christmas special.

Sage words. But apparently he can't be arsed. 🙂

Normally get 5-10, shit on anything maths or physics, decent on geography/biology/history/popular culture/

Last night was terrible though. The only one I got that the team didn't was the modern film based on La Jetée.

You mean the record held by Toxteth O'Grady, who also holds the record for the world's stickiest bogey?

I haven’t done this for a while. But at Ampthill towers we do the same scoring as them. You can only score on questions where you git the starter correct. We often place between the 2 teams. This is because my wife is good at this stuff. On the other hand I help because I know things she doesn’t know

I rarely know any answers so I don't watch as it makes me feel stupid.

Same with Mastermind.

For the record I hate Trivial pursuit and my mum once declared to teenage me "Your general knowledge is appalling".... That crushed me. Thanks mum :-/

{EDIT} Like Cougar, in the rare occasion I know an answer it is often unanswered by anyone on the TV and my wife uses that fact to try and bolster my low opinion of my intellect.

Haven't watched it for ages, but usually a few. If I got 5 or 6 that would be a really good score, and I don't think I've ever got double figures!

Mastermind - the general knowledge round has become so easy I'm embarrassed for it

Only Connect - good and bad weeks, but usually enjoyable.  I've got 5 points twice, and yes, I'm pleased with myself when it happens

University Challenge - Amol has been an upgrade from the later Paxman years (for understandable reasons) as he has rediscovered the art of pacing the questions.  The knowledge contained in younger minds is a reminder of my age.
