Today is my birthday and I am not able to fully enjoy it. Another first. All along I've said I don't want anything and told the kids not to bother. Kids are upset as they haven't got me anything. I didn't think about it from their point of view, until a friend explained it to me last night. I have well and truly messed this up, without thinking. This is something Lyanda would have normally sorted out. Just another part of the learning curve.

Hopefully things will improve as the day goes on. At least I bought a cake so they can enjoy that with me later.

Can you perhaps explain that all you'd really like is a few sweets/cheap treats then take them to the shop with a quid apiece and let them choose as a surprise? Would the oldest be able to coordinate the little ones (with Dad watching at arm's length)?

Happy Birthday dude. They'll understand one day, don't beat yourself up about it.

Take em out for pizza or something.

Tell the kids "you know what I'd really like for my birthday......."

Something like a walk, a hot chocolate in a cafe, go feed the ducks, etc. Tell them they are the most important thing on your birthday.

Do you have a friend who might help by getting something for the kids to give you? It may be your birthday, but half the fun for the kids is them giving you a pressie, no matter how small. Do you feel up to making your birthday tea more of a party for their sakes? Hope you can get through this difficult day ok, and as you know, everyone here is thinking of you.

Alan, I'm sure you will sort this one.
Add above, a memory walk/cafe/park and little card they can buy it make and you are getting there.
Let us know how it goes.

Just tell them a hug is so much more than a present.

I have already told them they are what's important and what I'd like more than anything if they want to do something for me is for them to make me a card. Received home made cards this morning, and really nice they are too. Amazing in fact.

A friend is popping round later with their kids, no doubt they will sort something out with them.

Happy birthday.

Homemade cards and other stuff is where it's at. We have an angel on the tree and a Rudolf that are 20+ years old from early child-care crafts. They are more precious to me than the crystal stars and Jensen ornaments that are also up.

Happy birthday. Please stop beating yourself up. As others have said go for a walk, feed some ducks etc. Create a great memory for you all to share. One day at a time. Take care

Happy Birthday mate.
Tell the kids you fancy a puddle splashing session. Get out there & get wet. Warm up with hot choc, harribo & cake.

Happy Birthday mate! Sorry for your loss... Give the kids a hug and explain how it’s far more important than any gift could be...

It's gone well. My friend popped round and told me to go! They were having the kids for a few hours so I could have some time to myself. Went and had a really nice relaxing afternoon. Went swimming, used the jacuzzi and the sauna and had a really tasty cajun chicken panini and chips afterwards. Feel recharged and energised. Still missing a major part of my life and constantly in my thoughts, but made the most of what I could.

Came home and played with the kids, kerplunk, uno and connect 4. Turned out to be a wonderful day. Kids now relaxing watching their tablets while I have a peaceful cup of tea.

Thanks for all the well wishes and support. Really means a lot.
