Has anyone any recommendations for an underwater camera - 18m max depth?
I'm doing the PADI OWD course in october in Lanzarote and will probably want some snaps. budget is pretty limited and it may not get used more than once a year after this october.
For doing the OWD course just concentrate on diving. You don't need to worry about taking pictures (which will almost certainly be awful). Try and get the instructor or a friendly Dive Master to take a few snaps of you in training if you want something for facebook.

You can take video as well and use it the bike. Bargain!

I don't think any of the cheap decent compact waterproof cameras will go to 18m. I have a Fuji XP, which is rated to 15m and I have used on plenty of dives to 12m (the max depth my son is currently allowed to dive to) I also have an Olympus TG4, which is more expensive, but again only waterproof to 15m. For the TG-4 I have a separate dive housing, which goes to around 40m, but certainly not a cheap option.
The GoPro style linked to above is probably the best bet, they seem to be getting very common underwater now a days.
And as mentioned above don't use it for your OW dives, wait until you are confident in the water before having the camera with you.

+1
You won't want to be bothered by having extra kit clipped to your BCD. Esp. when you have to take it off etc.
All DMs are friendly (*waves*) so they will take some snaps if you ask nicely.

Surely, towards the end of his course, he should be confident and competent enough to have a camera clipped to his stab jacket? If not then PADI haven't done their job. (Again!)
HSE SSDE and BSAC of 30 years.
Another vote for forgetting to the camera on OWD. Are there any cameras that you can scuba with that are cheap? We have a great Sony for snorkeling. People pay more for their waterproof housing than I did for my Canon D50.
You may get lucky getting a housing for a cheap point and shoot camera. Don't expect much from the pictures though. There's a reason that even amateurs have numerous arms for strobes and various filters.
Enjoy the driving for what it is.

NO! You need the underwater photographer course to do that.

Thanks for all the advice. it's funny - i did wonder if i should just forget the camera but i found it fascinating when i did a 30 minute taster session last year down to 3m interesting that you think the same.
I'll be snorkeling as well - i cant imagine i'll spend more than a day on a sunbed and the hotel is on the beach. might take a punt on that 4000 and see how the diving goes.
Yeah, the housing is the pricey bit - and colours just disappear as you deeper, all my good shots are in the shallows.
I have a Canon G9 and the matching housing doing nothing in a drawer at home though - would be open to offers on those.
The sj4000 is quite fiddly and you might struggle if you need gloves but I've had some good pictures out of it while snorkelling in good light. Good enough for the money though.
I got an SJ7000 as a first time underwater camera. Just came back from Hawaii and managed to take some fair photos. The compression on the pictures and videos is noticeable, and unfortunately you can't change what bit rate to encode in. Still for £60 I got some reasonable shots.
