Our under stairs cupboard currently has some B&Q shelving units for shoe storage. They're a bit crap. This will give you an idea

https://mumonthebrink.com/2012/one-corner-at-a-time-understairs-cupboard/

Back wall is shitty plasterboard about a micron thick.

I'm crap at woodworking DIY.

What I thought I was after was a nice modular, inexpensive cube system to store shoes etc. Able to be adjusted to cope with the sloping roof and with a back to act as a, err, backstop. Easy to install.

What I discovered is there is plenty of flippin expensive stuff out there.

One of the more reasonable options, IKEA Algot freestanding tray system looked OK, but the width and depth are the ''wrong" way around, i.e. they need to be shallow but wide, so I can get in to the far reaches.

https://www.ikea.com/gb/en/products/storage-furniture/storage-systems/algot-frame-6-mesh-baskets-top-shelf-white-spr-29276300/

Should I just get a chippy in and be done with it?

I can't believe I'm the first to have this (first world) problem 🙂

Cheers

I made something like the below link, although instead of the runners i put the drawers on wheels. Probelm is it gave us quite a bit more storage which the Mrs quickly filled up with shite :/

Design. Produce a cutting list.

Get down to the timber merchants, buy an 8x4 sheet of 15mm MDF and leave the nice sawyer with MDF, biscuits and the list. Collect later (cutting will probably cost extra, so maybe save on the biscuits?).

Buy 25mm x 25mm planed softwood, screws and glue to support the ends of each shelf. MDF will bend, so uprights every 600mm?

MDF primer and paint to suit

I've used the children's Trofast range with plastic containers under my stairs - it's only 30cm deep.

Top tip : make sure the unit will fit 'round the corner' (through the door) before you build it, or you'll end up taking it apart again and having to rebuild it inside the cupboard!

We DIYed..

Small cupboard, which narrows as you go in, so made shelves which narrow to maximise access.

Would the Ikea Kallax stuff work? Buy different sizes (ie, 4 x 4, 4 x 2, 2 x 2) to suit? You could have some open and some drawer units?

And if you look on Ebay I bet there'll be loads of them for sale as it's often used for children's stuff then got shot of when the children get older.

I have this Ikea storage unit in my understairs cupboard. It has records in, as it's pretty sturdy. Goes 90deg to the set up in the pic. (on it's side, if you see what I mean)

Its the perfect DIY project. No-one will see it so it doesn't have to be tidy, just functional. You can use whatever you can source easily. Mine is made from bits of old IKEA units sourced from the bin/recycling area of my local IKEA.

I bought two 2x2 cubes, similar to the Kallax ones to go in the cupboard under the stairs in the bit before the slope of the stairs impinges.

I measured their width and determined that they would fit, but forgot to account for the skirting board at the bottom, and also the width of the door frame into the cupboard.

Luckily it was flat pack so I could beuild it in the cupboard, and I planed away the bottom of it to accomodate the skirting board 🙂

Doh!

I think I had to build mine in the cupboard too, as the doorway was just too small.

Thanks for all the suggestions folks.

Top tip on checking whether self-assembly units will fit in/ 'turn the corner' if assembled outside - that's exactly the kind of thing I would forget to do, then swear afterwards!

Some of the Ikea suggestions are promising, e.g. some combinations of the Trofast childrens range could work.

Also the suggestion on sourcing second hand on ebay - I'd not thought about that but fairly obvious once you think about it, ha 🙂  Nearest Ikea to me is a bit of a hike so I won't be lurking round their bins 😉 but I'm a lot happier with the prospect of chopping up second hand units than taking a saw to new ones, so I'll keep an eye on ebay for local 'collection only' units.

Footflaps - appreciate you posting pics; along with others' suggestions to DIY it, I think I'll have a go a designing something later. Maybe batons screwed in to back wall and then units attached to those to stop them toppling over.

I did look at the plastic parts bins/ picking boxes like these  http://www.bigdug.co.uk/storage-boxes-containers-c363/plastic-parts-bins-c364/value-large-stacking-pick-bins-p18687/s38250    but the cost adds up once you start trying to fill the space with them, and they might not be overly accessible.

Keep the ideas coming!

Ta
