righto, upon flushing the bog at home this morning i noticed that the water level took a good couple of minutes to return to its usual point, which would indicate that there's something (probably very sinister) partially blocking the pipe somewhere. what's the best method of clearing said blockage? i'm not prepared to shove any of my limbs in there, mind...
curtain wire
if your not prepared to get your hands dirty then call someone in.
I usually use the wife's toothbrush.
Neighbour's Dachshund.
keep flushing and hope that the weight of water in a full pan will force things through.
failing that you'll need to get access to the inspection cover and see if the blockage is before or after that.
is water backing up into where the guttering goes into the drains at all?

i don't know; i live in a ground floor flat and the toilet pipe goes straight beneath the floor and out into the drain in the street outside (the bathroom faces out onto the front; it's a strange layout!)...
rented? call the landlord.
yours? call dynorod....
1 check the drains
2 try a plunger
3 get one of those long flexy wire things from a plumbers merchant
4 get some acid-based drain unblocker from a plumbers merchant
5 see if you're covered by a plumbing insurance policy
pray that it's near your loo - if it's backed up for the everyone you could be seeing it all again once the pipes fill up...
do you have a management company - I'd contact them?
If there's any flow at all, you can use a liquid or granulated drain unblocker (B&Q do someof both). There's some envoirnmentally friendly stuff that will digest the blockage assuming it's organic, and it probably is, or some caustic burn the shit away and kill some fishies while you're about it that is more gunaranteed to work. Try the tree huggy stuff first, then the blaster.
Also, there should be a breather pipe outside, if you can get to the top of it, pour caustic down the breather tube once the toilet is at it's normal level, that should stop the planet eating liquid from being diluted (less important with the organic shit-eating stuff.
Of course, I'm asuming that the blockage is in the relatively narrow outside pipe, not the wider internal pipes. A spot of plunging is pretty gross, but with a good chance of it clearing any blockage near the loo
yeah i was going to try to sort it myself but i reckon it makes sense to ring my landlord. he's good for sorting any issues quickly anyway.
We had similar, high water level, then as it slowly dropped it would go right down until air was sucked around the U bend, making a glugging noise.
Turned out the manhole outside was brimmed and the soil pipe didn't appear to be vented, as the water dropped it sucked the air back in through the bog.
Luckily we were the start of the sewer run otherwise we'd have had a flooded garden...also we were renting so got the landlord to sort it 🙂
Throw a couple of buckets of water down there first off. If there's still a problem, you can buy a long twisty thing from B&Q designed for just this event. That will clear anything immediately local to the bog. If this doesn't work it must be something further into the drain and might be a job for a plumber.
Who is responsible for this pipe-choker? Don't be shy about sending the missus off to B&Q if she fesses up.
garry- i had a barbeque on sunday and i think it may well be down to my german friend; she was in there for quite a while late in the evening...
Go to a proper trade plumbers merchants and get some Knockout. It's not meant to be sold to non trade, but they always do sell it. Pour it in the water, 10 mins later job done (or job gone)Dangerous stuff so don't breathe the vapours in, but bloody good stuff.

Simple, all you need to do is:
Get a Mop, any will do
Old t-shirt
Plastic bag
Duck tape
The process goes like this,
Wrap the t shirt around the head of the mop and tape it in place. Then put the t shirt and mop head into the plastic bag and duct tape like hell. Then pop the mop head with it's new covering into the bog and plung like mad. The trick is to get enough pressure by squeezing the mop head into the pan and on removal it should suck the mess out of the way. Adjust the mop t shirt rate if needed.
I did this and it actually worked only took about 10minutes and saved me a wedge on the cost of a plummer.
Environmentally friendly drain unblocker on the foul side is pretty pointless - the scale of dilution and the fact that it all goes through a massive bio-treatment process puts paid to that.
DO NOT CALL DYNOROD!
sorry
DO NOT CALL DYNOROD!!
sorry again 😳
7 years vacter/jetter operater for thameside mbc and half the jobs were repairing dynorods **** ups after charging MASSIVE amounts of money

PMSL!! 😀
try a plunger, a decent rubber one, pour a bucket of water in and pump' pour water in and keep pumping, if the pipe is blocked further on get some rods and look for a screw on cap on pipe on outside wall(normally on bend when it comes out of wall and down) CAREFULLY unscrew cap and stick the rods in, if its blocked any further than this then its usualy a blocked manhole and you need a jetter, look for local one man bands DO NOT CALL DYNOROD!
Man up, Bin bags + gaffer tape + Arm.
surely 'man up' would be wearign a vest and then you can get your arm right in there and use your fingers to break up whatever's causing the blockage more easily?
So many complicated suggestions on here.
Plunger will do the trick if not follow Bigjohn's advice.
You don;t need a plunger for most blockages. Just put a loo brush into the water and plunge it up and down enthusiastically. That'll shift most things.
I have blocked quite a few toilets in my time with some rather evil brown babies. Always used the pooring hot water in a big bucket method myself. Sometimes it takes quite a few dropped from a height but it works to shift persistant offenders.
just got home, launched a couple of buckets of hot water down the bog and that seems to have done the trick.
off to eat burritos and stuff tonight so there's every chance it'll happen again in the next day or two...
Has Samantha Cameron been round your house?
I knew it. No-one would listen to me, but I told you this would happen.
Get her back round your gaff, and tell her to stick her arm down there and sort the bastard thing out!
Typical Tory; create a massive pile of shit, then run away for someone else to sort out... 🙄
Did you get a satisfying 'THUNK' noise when it cleared. I imagine the offending article washing away growling at me as it swims away
'titter'.
Man up, Bin bags + gaffer tape + Arm.
Surely that should read 'Man up OR gaffer tape'.
It is only poo, piss and water - stick your hand in there and sort it out. 😉
I usually use a toilet brush and if that doesn't work I got the plunger from the shed - that always works.
