At the weekend we stayed at a hotel that we prepaid for.
We had a meal in the evening and when we asked for the bill we were told that the WiFi was down so they couldn't give us a bill.
Next morning we checked out and even though we enquired about the meal nothing showed on the computer , so there was nothing to pay.
Checked my credit card and they have taken some money. It's more than what it should be so we are going to complain.
Question is, can they take any money from my card without informing me or giving me a bill?
why not call and ask them about it first before getting all frothy.
no need to try and arm your self until you have all the facts.
how they respond to an enquiry would determine how i moved forward instead of going straight to defcon moan
If they had a pre-auth from the original booking then they may just have used that.
there's a type of authorisation that allows 'ongoing payments' to be taken (so where you book a hotel but there may be 'extras' that aren't known about in advance). They get you to sign something on arrival that says you agree to an indeterminate future payment being taken and then use the original authorisation to process the full payment.
Challenge it with the card issuer.
It's been pre-authorised for your hotel stay, so yes, in the same way they can retrospectively take money for the minibar if you raid that (or for the whole stay, if you hadn't paid in advance and buggered off without paying). I'm sure you agree that you owe them something for dinner, and that money had to be paid at some point - that's what pre-authorisation is for, imagine having to chase up some random guest for his dinner bill when he's left the county, or maybe the country.
Are you sure you didn't indulge in the 'special channels', and they're trying to spare your blushes? 🙂
Just ring them up and ask for an itemised bill to be sent through. If it's wrong, take it up with the hotel and move to a chargeback if they persist with the mistake.
