I have an antique grandmother pendulum clock (my 100yr old nana's nana originally bought it!). It's not ticked properly for years and looking at the movement, it's somewhat gummed up with 150 years of oil creating too much stiction in the coil springs so it only runs for an hour or so before stopping.
Doing some internet research, it seems like a dip in an ultrasonic cleaner should get all the gummed up grime off and hopefully revitalise the clock movement.
Measuring the movement (150mm x 150mm x 60mm deep, it would fit into a 1.5l ultrasonic cleaner OK - question being, is there any harm in going larger ultrasonic cleaner? Are all brands much of a muchness? Any recommendations for ultrasonic cleaners balancing cost with longevity?
Thanks!
It might help, provided you use the correct fluid. Don’t use just water or water and detergent though. Most of the shafts are likely to be steel and without a thorough dryout will rust and you are very likely to make problems worse an very short order.
Much better to take apart and clean then dry components individually and put back together with oil in the right places. If you don’t feel confident doing this, it may be best to get someone who knows what they are doing to do it. Put it this way, I have an ultrasonic cleaner and know where to get the fluid and I would be wary…
As for cleaners, Look on Cooksons website eg. https://www.cooksongold.com/Jewellery-Tools/Technique-Ultrasonic-1.8l-Stainless-Steel,-New-Model-prcode-999-136U&query=Ultrasonic%20%20machine&channel=uk
TLDR: I wouldn’t without doing thorough research and getting the right fluid
I went with a Vevor one but got the 10l version. It’ll fit an Eagle cassette which was what I wanted.
I’ve been impressed with it so far.
I've had 2 vevor ones and they both broke in about 10 minutes. But that could just be bad luck.
Got a 10l Vevor one, prob had it three years and been ok for me.
150x150 ain’t going in a 1.5l though. Would just go in a 10l
Can also be used to wash your feet in 😉
