This article in the Guardian suggests that we in the UK endure the worst quality of life in Europe. To which I can only say, Tosh.

With such 'facts' cited as us having a

high cost of living, with food and diesel prices the highest in Europe,
, I can hardly believe the study was undertaken by someone who can read and do maths.

Every year we spend a month on the Continent: normally Germany, but also Spain, France, and Belgium, and while diesel can certainly be lower in cost in France, it is hardly lower anywhere else, and groceries can be quite a bit higher.

One principle that I think always gets overlooked is how much something costs in proportion to income. So, for example, if a Canadian friend comes over here and says that something is expensive, I find myself asking them how much the same item would cost them back home in relation to how much they make.

In light of that, I can't imagine the cost of living being much lower anywhere than here in the UK (excluding housing).

Sure, things aren't perfect, but they're a damn sight better that 'the worst in Europe'.

I don't believe Mr Chamberlain. I think it'll end up in a war.

I vow to never post another effing news article here (or anywhere) ever again.

Now, back to my bike. I'm quite excited. It's brand new.

To be fair to SaxonRider there isn't much cited in that article that will have changed significantly in the last 4 years though unlike SaxonRider I would be inclined to agree with it. I'm not moving though, I prefer to be underpaid and overcharged and live under perpetually grey skies. I'm odd like that.

quality of life defined by cost of diesel...

It’s an economic report so for “quality of life” read cost of living v incomes – it’s not a measure of happiness or contentment.

Diesel a surprisingly good indicator of cost of living - more than just the cost of fuel for motoring which can be quite high for some people - 10% in some rural places it also helps determine the cost most things we buy, including food which is another big bill for most people.

The very low rate of inflation we're seeing at the moment which is calming the effect of low wages and low wage increases is coming largely from deflated oil prices, it reduces the cost of motoring, it reduces the cost of food and pretty much anything else you buy through reduced transport and production costs, it reduces the cost of heating your home etc.

Even though this article if very out of date, we're still very bad for cost of living in the UK, housing is so massively overpriced like for like it roughly double the cost of the other major European economies.
