Ok, no summer holiday booked as yet, but the kids are ganging up on me for Spanish holiday this year! So, my youngest, 11, her passport has expired and mine is due to expire end of November this year. I assume that I'm in for renewal of both passports? Or can I get away with renewing 11 year olds only i.e. does the six month on passport before travelling still apply? Will BREXIT have any impact on this come October? I know, I'm sure my local post office will have all the answers, but wwstd?

I'd just get it renewed. I don't think Brexit or the risk of Brexit is an issue...we're currently not in shengen so normal rules apply effectively. I've always adhered to the 6 month rule even for travel to the EU. I'd be amazed if Brexit has any affect whatsoever on our ability to enter and travel within the EU. It would be a rather pathetic and infantile move by the EU to explicitly attempt to 'punish' us in this way which would backfire on on them as millions of EU citizens travel to the UK all the time and live and work here too so any punitive measures would apply to them too. So not in the EU's or the member states interests at all. The EU will do what it always does...only do things that benefit the EU, and restricting travel to and from the UK is not in their interests. Loads of EU companies have significant footprints in the UK with thousands of EU workers..it would take years and millions if not billions of euro's for them to relocate if the EU suddenly spat their dummy out and restricted movement in and out of the UK. It would be a move that would play into the hands of the popularists on both sides of the channel and strengthen their rhetoric.

It has to be valid for the duration of your stay in the EU.

If you're going in the summer hols then you don't need to renew yours yet. EU don't need 6 months on it like the good ol' US of A do.

Maybe worth renewing if you want to flash your red passport for a while yet, rather than a blue one in November if we bail out on BoJos terms.

Just to add that I renewed mine recently via the online service. You still have to send the old passport back via post which I did first class signed for, but I had the new passport back in 6 days and had text updates throughout. Was impressed!

Don’t know the answer to the question but after booking our first overseas trip since the children were born I am disappointed to have had to shell out over £300 so far for passports.

I did similar pretty much exactly one year ago, passport expired the day after I was due to return from Portugal, I travelled on it and nobody batted an eyelid, phew! I realised a month before when I had a last minute work trip to Norway and I had to enter my details into the work travel system. Norwegian border control lady advised me to renew as soon as I got home. For peace of mind check airline T&Cs and FO advice for travel to country.

Thanks for the replies. The PO check and send service looks fairly efficient and good value, but seems to be for adults only. I think I'll pop along to our local PO to see how easy it is to renew my daughters! Thanks.

Personally I'd be renewing ASAP just to reduce the chances of getting a blue one.

Don't bother, as above do it online, you take your own photo upload it, it only takes a few minutes. Taxi jnr did his on a Tuesday posted his old passport off the same day and the new one came Friday. Fantastic service 😎

did mine via the online service from abroad

took maybe a week or so, and was seamless. fill in form online, print and sign declaration page only, pop that, passport, photos* in an envelope, and post it recorded. new passport arrives some days later via DHL signed for (and the old void passport in a separate DHL signed-for!). none of that nonsense about getting someone to write an essay on the back of the photo stating that it's a true likeness etc.

(* i think you can upload digital photos too, but I did it old school)

if we're still in EU you can use it right up to the day of expiry, and i think can even return on it after expiry. after that, I'd expect you'd need the usual 3-6 months left on it.

don't recall how much extra time you get  on the validity of the new one if you renew early so wouldn't renew too far ahead unless necessary.

Find a white wall, get the photo done and apply for the youngest's online now, just to give you some breathing space, the last thing you need is to be waiting on a passport with a week till you fly...

I received an email from the passport office recently reminding me my passport was running out within six months and to renew sooner rather than later due to summer and possible brexit issues.

No, just annoyed it costs so much.

Did ours online and it is much easier than faffing around with the forms. Got the pictures done at the local printing shop as they give you a code to enter that uploads them straight to the online form and makes sure they will be accepted.

USA don’t require 6 months if you have a UK passport

If you want to be a third country expect to be treated as such.

Anytime prior to Brexit your passport will be fine, afterwards you may well need three months validity. even if you probably won't need a visa, you will be looking at a visa waver when the system is up and running.

For the young'uns, you can't renew online unfortunately, as they still need someone to sign the photo as a true likeness.

For adult renewals, online is great, and to be fair to the Passport Agency, the service is really decent whether online or on paper.

Like others have said, fast and lots of text notifications of progress.

I'd renew all now and really not bother with the Post Office check and send service.

Final point, I don't think you get the extra months added onto a renewed passport now, you just get 10 / 5 years, so if you're really tight, maybe wait till November for yours.

I essentially did this a few months ago, but so I could get one that still had 'European Union' on the cover. It actually made me cry a bit when it arrived.

Not to be such a downer, man. But Boy2 had to attend an interview to renew his passport. Visit to the nearest passport office for a 30 minute intense interview to prove who he was. To add to that he's autistic. Fun day of redline stress. Not.

My youngest was 12 in April and I’ve just renewed his online, got his new one within two weeks. £49 and painless, the hardest part was trying to take his photo without him laughing!

Wait. We'll be £13bn better off in November and passports will be cheaper then.
Or you could just renew online now 🙂

Not sure about renewing them but you can certainly get their first passport online. You just have to nominate someone to confirm the details. All done via email.

Worth doing - despite what the laws of various countries are airlines often have a 6 month rule and trying to argue with them just adds frustration to your holiday you could do without.

You’re going to have to do it anyway and it’ll not need to be done for another 10 years...
