Have we done this yet?

BBC News - UK applying to join Asia-Pacific free trade pact CPTPP
https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-55871373

This may belong on the Brexit thread, but I think it's separate - we're going to apply on Monday, to replace our previous membership of the EU, with membership of a bloc which accounts for a % of our trade roughly equivalent to that of Germany alone.

Haven't we already got a deal with Japan?

We have a deal already with 7 of the 11 members

The Government is back slapping over joining a free trade group, after leading us out of the worlds largest and most successful free trade group which also happens to be on our doorstep.

I do wonder if they'll let us. We're neither in Asia or the Pacific. And free trading with us could diminish their trade with each other.

But we're not going to end up selling much fresh food to the Pacific, I don't think. Or buying that many just-in-time manufactured parts.

I hope I'm wrong but it will be a very poor replacement for what we've lost, provided we're allowed to join. The big questions are:

A: Will they let us join?
B: How much will it cost us?
C: What will the tangible benefits for us be?
D: Will it prevent us doing any other deals with anyone else?

I can't help but think it's a way to grab some headlines with very little benefit. It could also be part of their plan to make us into a new Singapore-style Tax Haven. Plus what effect will it have on our new relationship with the EU? It could bring some benefits from Asian deals but the losses closer to home could wipe them out completely.

That is Bojo's administration in a nutshell, no depth, no analysis, no long term view. It's all about a good headline.

Apparently it could be the route to a back door deal with the US as they were going to join until Trump pulled the plug. Biden is likely to resume negotiations and if the US does join will make the bloc far more significant.

Meanwhile we can't send carrots to Belfast.

Great idea maybe the UK could also join the united federation of planets.

Our ports are log jammed and will be for some time. Unless you fly it in, it doesn't matter where it comes from!

I'm sure Priti Patel will be frothing over holding bilateral talks on stoning people to death with Brunei.

I suspect we’d opt to leave the solar system if we put it to the vote

Well, when we have a referendum on it, I’ll vote in favour. I mean, we wouldn’t do this without a vote, would we…?

My post on the Brexit thread last night...

you couldn’t make it up if you tried; beyond parody.
We wilfully leave the 2nd largest trading bloc in the world and now go chasing membership of something much smaller.
It’s like Jurgen Klopp saying…we loved being one of the big boys in the premiership but what we now really want is to be in the Manders Paints southern alliance.
Talk about varnishing turds…

As far as I’m aware we are still trading with Europe albeit with a lot more needless paperwork and bureaucracy. This is not a replacement deal it’s additional. Who knows there may be some cracking deals on a GR Yaris in the future.

CPTPP ,it’s a catchy title so much better than EU.this shower must think we all came down with the last shower...if US get in on it too will that revive TTIP ? And it’s likely consequences to nhs etc?

I said this in the Brexit thread but joining this will give something for Farage to campaign against in a few years.😉

I can see the billboard pics of Mexicans, ala Turkey, coming up an escalator to Kent already...

Joking aside (possibly) beggars can't be choosers?

We'd join a library at the moment and call it a win.

I don’t think comparing membership of CPTPP to the EU is particularly valid.

Considering deals already in place, what’s the actual value of existing trade that would move into a free trade deal?

Maybe it comes with a free movement deal to NZ and Aus.

Anyone up for relocation?

AlJazeera:

The UK’s trade with the partnership was worth 111 billion pounds ($152bn) in 2019, with Japan accounting for near one-quarter.

So, some of that $152bn trade would get easier and somewhat cheaper, but not all of it, because in 2019 some/all/none (I don't know? Anyone?) was covered by an EU agreement with the countries?

Apparently Liz Truss in Sept 2020:

Joining CPTPP would send a powerful signal to the rest of the world that Britain is prepared to work with countries who champion free and fair trade.

Alternatively, we could think about joining that enormous free and fair trade block that's 31 miles of channel tunnel away, as opposed to the one that is 1/6 the size and on the other side of the planet.

Sensible hat on, Mexico is growing, Malaysia is... wait, Canada is part of it.

I've found the Canada style deal!

It's with Canada!

applying to join the CCCP you say? I thought this government was leaning more towards the fascists than the socialists.

includes Canada, Australia and New Zealand, plus a few unimportant foreign places. Makes a good starting point for CANZUK. Soon have it knocked into shape.

Or even look at EFTA, which would make like a little easier dealing with that nearby trade block.

You won't get free movement to Aus. We're more concerned with getting a deal with the eu

I was thinking that this sounds like the Pacific Rim equivalent of TTIP, which was not very popular with the public back when it was being negotiated. Have any researchers/journalists looked into the small print of CPTPP to see what it has to say about, for example, allowing foreign competition into healthcare systems?

I’d like to think we’d join the Alliance, but I know we’d be queuing up to be part of the Empire

The EU isn't a free trade block...of the type the Tories want anyway. Its a single market with rules, regulation's, laws and of course Governance.

What these shysters* in Government want is a totally free trade system free from, well any restrictions what so ever, but even CPTPP still needs Governance, rules, and of course a mechanism of arbitration between disputing countries.

This Government and the true villains of the piece, the 'think tanks' and hedge funders are trying to will a system into place that didn't exist in the past and won't exist in the future, despite their efforts, the population of this country are going to pay a heavy price for this.

*Also those who are just trying to sell UK assets to the highest bidder, pocket the money, then run off into the sunset while the people of the UK try and sort the mess out they left behind.
