Seems that way, Bad way for Silva to go out, but excellent tactics, and reactions, from Weidman. Knew the leg kicks would be coming, so worked on checking them.

Bananananana.....

Saw this earlier, looked at a video of their last fight. How are people not sickened by an unconscious man being punched in the face?
I love boxing but that's a shit sport.

One of the most annoying things about the fight is the imagery that it leaves behind. It's not how anderson will be remembered though.

Siiiiiigh.

In fairness Herb Dean is one of the very best. He gave anderson one or two seconds (literally) to recover in the first fight. It was a textbook stoppage imho.

Listen, all sports have unfortunate events. How about when a cyclist collapses dead at the top of a climb after wheeling in too many drugs? is that not disgusting? A racing car driver burning to death in his car? no?

I agree, Herb has been there from the start. It was almost a generalised point about how the odd decision, like letting a few extra blows land, was not indicative of a sports failures.

As for Dez, I think he just has a bit of sand in his vagina. Which Herb Dean would probably stop the thread for.

There's no doubt about it, it's a brutal sport and some fights are unpleasant to watch but you can't deny the athletes that it has produced.

People do what they will do, trying to knock someone out is as senseless as risking life and limb on a motorycle racing round the iom.

Biggest sport in the world isnt it?

I saw Silva last night. Career stopping? Perhaps. Frank Mir recovered after a couple of years from his bike smash. I doubt Silva will want to wait and try to re-enter. And that means a Silva / GSP fight deffo won't happen.

UFC has come a long way since the early days. Try watching the early ones (1-20)

Given the many many ways in which an MMA fighter can attack his opponent, the fights dont usually last very long and the lightly padded gloves mean a clean punch will usually KO the opponent and bring a decisive end to the fight. There are also the fights that end without a KO or any kind of shot to the head and are decided by a wrestling style submission.

Contrast this to boxing where the only method is to punch your opponent repeatedly and then look at the ridiculously oversized gloves they wear and then consider the prevalence of acute brain injuries and long term brain injuries in the sport.
Boxing is the sport that needs bringing up to date and the first step would be to reduce the padding in the gloves so fights are ended more quickly, 12 rounds of repeatedly being punched to the head inflicts the kind of damage that MMA has so far managed to avoid...although i will concede the sport is young and we may yet see the emergence of 'punch drunk' old MMA fighters....but i doubt it.

By all accounts when boxing was bare knuckle, head injuries were rare, of course the fighters would cut up more badly than they do now but the hand always breaks before the skull does....it was the sight of all the blood that offended Victorian sensibilites and led to the gloving up of fighters.
Since that moment KOs have been more difficult to come across and have required repeated blows to the head to achieve.

Its the same reason head injuries, concussions etc are more prevalent in American football than Rugby, with the 'protection' worn in American football they go for each others heads with a ferocity rarely seen in other sports, if you tried that in Rugby (apart from being sent off) you'd likely come of worse as a clash of heads when neither party has a helmet will hurt both parties and it will be immediate not something that shows itself years later as early onset Parkinsons or something equally as hideous.

UFC is great, the skill set required is huge and you can no longer get on simply by being a thug...the fighters need both a world class stand up game and a world class ground game.

Yup. That's why your Tank Abbott types got squeezed out the game. They simply would get submitted while swinging dem haymakers. Every fighter has had to add wrestling/submission skills to their locker as a result.

The early fights were a bit different, mostly ended in submission which must be the safest way but I think that was because the kickers and punchers couldn't grapple so were often beaten by the good grapplers. There are more rules now to make it a more acceptable sport to the masses - they once didn't have to wear gloves and I remember a fight were someone was repeatedly punched to the groinal area.

Looks violent but it's boxing that would be banned if it was invented now.

If you're looking for defence of the sport, yes. Oh, this sport is worse, this one has more head injuries and another one is out of date doesn't cut it though.
Unconscious combatants getting repeated blows to the head WILL result in punch drunk fighters and if you're not sickened by seeing it then it's the sport for you, but it ain't the one for me.
But you can't defend it, any more than I would bother to defend boxing to someone who thinks it's barbaric.

I dont think anyone here is defending hitting unconscious people DezB what they are trying to do is have a grown up debate about which sport
causes the worst injuries

It would seem this causes most injuries in the ring which stops the worst injuries after the fight bit like bare knuckle fighting as well - to be faor they do both look worse to me as well.

I am not aware of a fighter having died yet in this sport, though it may well happen, unlike boxing.

Its clear you dont like it and that is fine [ many think like that about boxing]but at least debate in a mature way

Both sports have risks, both sports have their ugly side - Tyson for example and the "rapport" before fights and boith are ultimately about clobbering someone till they have been beaten - literally and sportingly.

That's not a grown up debate. That's saying my sport's ok cos these are worse. ie. Utter nonsense.
All I said was I was sickened by people getting pummeled while already unconcious. If you enjoy seeing that, then be "mature" enough to say "I enjoy seeing a bloke being punched in the face when he's out". not try to say other things are worse.

I don't think many people enjoy that bit of it, any more than, say, I could claim that people enjoy crashes in cycling or broken legs in football.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fatalities_in_mixed_martial_arts_contests
It makes grim reading, thankfully still very few deaths though.

Don't get me wrong, I appreciate the skill and the amount of work that goes into developing the skill and the fitness required. I know guys who fight at a decent standard and I have a long history in Judo and Muay Thai, so I appreciate the game, when it's played well.
Just sometimes, it's ugly.

Often fighters recover very quickly from a KO and do defend and fight back. I've seen people ko'd then win the fight. The ref cannot jump in the second he see's someone knocked out because of the fast recovery of the fighters. They have amazing conditioning.

I get that you don't understand it. Honestly.

UFC 1 - 10 is just quality watching and something everyone should see.

The old days of having to fight 3 times a night, against people who could be a) dangerous mofo's or b) complete muppets who think they're nails made for a great spectacle.

I must admit having seen my arm do something similar everytime I see a break like that it does make me feel a bit sick

Incidentally, though I'm less of a fan now, I wouldn't be interested in seeing it banned.
I get that they are consenting adults, highly trained and medically supervised. Thats all fine. I just don't like seeing additional punishment meted out to defenceless people.

Anyway, here's one of my favourite highlight videos. The soundtrack is...interesting, but somehow works.

I've got total admiration for these guys as athletes. Went on an MMA fitness bootcamp last year with a mate - it was near the end of the enduro season so I was good and fit, but those guys were on a whole different level. Huge amounts of fitness, strength, agility but also discipline.

Not my cup of tea, but I wouldn't want it banned.
It says something about society that we're quite happy to have men consensually battering each other on telly, but not making love to each other.
No idea what it says about society though, but it's always interesting what's considered acceptable at any given time.

Not society! Some people have all sorts of different opinions - I imagine most think MMA is bad.

Anyway, as an ex-martial artist I can see the appeal in testing yourself in this way.

Never been gay so don't see the appeal in getting intimate with a bloke but each to their own....

Oh, didn't Sacha Baron Cohen manage to combine these two in rather amusing film scene?!

It's a shame this thread had about 3% UFC 168 content, and 97% discussion about whether people like UFC/MMA, and if it should be banned or not.

I've not watched it all but am looking forward to it tonight, I couldn't avoid the Silva spoilers though, they were everywhere.

It was very similar to the first fight imo jamie, anderson was just starting to let em fly. I still think he could beat weidman, yeah he gets roughed up early but we've seen how resilient and crafty he can be in the fist sonnen fight. Doubt he'll be back though, he was hoping to represent brazil in the olympics in taekwondo.

Henderson pounding on Bisping when Bisping is out like a light and lying spread eagled on the canvas is pretty bad and was the act that turned me off MMA. If that is me being naive then I can live with that.

Also IMO 90% of the guys look like total nut jobs.

Current UFC champions

Cain Velasquez - Graduate of Arizona State University
Jon Jones - Was studying Criminal Justice at college but left to focus on MMA
Chris Weidman - Psychology degree from Hofstra University
Anthony Pettis - Attended a private catholic school and is a fireman
Jose Aldo - College graduate
Dominick Cruz - Was training as a fireman before fighting full time
Demetrious Johnson - Left college to fight full time
Ronda Rousey - Olympic bronze medallist. Full time athlete since she left school

Yep, all total nut jobs. 🙄

Looking round my gym, off the top of my head we've got

4 engineers
2 police
1 director of photography
1 senior HR person for the BBC
1 web developer
1 professional musician
1 lawyer
2 firemen
Etc

And we spend all week punching each other in the face, yet theres not a single "nut job" amongst us

The other main-event was a top fight appart from the lack of sports-womanship when she refused to shake hands at to end.

In the Weidman vs Silva 1, the ref was spot-on IMO. If it were me reffing, I'd have let it carry on as I don't like Silva's attitude in the ring.

Silva never looked as if he was up for the rematch to me but no one on god's earth could have predicted that ending - I predicted a Weidman victory in the 3rd fwiw.

I couldn't even look at the screen when watching it, not seen something as bad as when Gonzaga knocked out Cro Cop and his knee disintegrated

I used to really like it because of all the characters but now they are turning into GSP clones I've not watched many events

even as a fan I hate to see the extra hits etc, as big as it has got I still think a couple of bad injuries might force a change in the setup
