Suspended sentence after breaking someone's neck?

"Judge Jinder Singh Boora told the Grants: "Both of you flipped. Neither of you are by nature violent men." "    Oh, that's ok then if they are normally not violent ... probably just a bad day.

“Not by nature a violent man”... two previous convictions for GBH and ABH...

Based only on the info in the BBC article it sounds ridiculous, did the word of a few Toffs get them off?

Neither of you are by nature violent men.

Nah, they just get their kicks from ripping foxes apart with dogs.

did the word of a few Toffs get them off?

Well you don't expect them to work on the hunts themselves do you?

Well, he got £500 compo, what more could he possibly want??

I'd be looking at rounding up some like minded folks for some fire raising after that verdict.

200 hours unpaid work is probably about right after the 1/3 off for pleading guilty is taken into account!

Not saying its fair to the victim but the sentence is pretty typical!

I think you may have misunderstood the article - that was them pleading guilty, at a previous hearing, for the attack they were being sentenced for. I point that out purely for the sake of accuracy, not to make excuses for them. Planned, premeditated violence should see them actually jailed, not suspended.

Especially as they have kept quiet over who the others were. That should mean prison imo.

In answer to the topic; yes, very much so. I recommend the Secret Barristers book as a good starting point.

suspect that normally wouldn't have been much effort at investigation  and wouldn't have ended up in court.....except maybe:

"Mr Cunningham, a former police officer, said he was attacked......."

Always been know the law system is broke. Maybe the judge was looking to partake in the graceful sport/hobby of hunting.

Judge Jinder Singh Boora told the Grants: "Both of you flipped. Neither of you are by nature violent men."

George Grant said to his son: "Go and get the boys and come back."

Thomas Grant rode off on the quad bike and returned with a pickup vehicle, and he and four masked men got out.

Really? Judge Jinder Singh Boora should be bloody ashamed of himself.

I really hope there is more to this case than has been reported as otherwise I think the judge should be struck off as terrible decision.

Premeditated violence and refusal to name others should have a long custodial sentence to see if they could remember the names of others involved.

This has had a lot of coverage on the local news, partly as the hunt has been in trouble earlier in the year and partly because of who some of the character witnesses were.

As other have said, the fact that it was premeditated and they are still covering for others makes me think they should have gone to jail - as a result of which, they would have lost their jobs and their tied houses, which I have no problem with as a consequence of their criminal actions

HOWEVER - if you think "lenient" sentencing like this is confined to the upper classes, I fear you may be disappointed. Lots of scrotes get similar sentences for similar crimes.

The issue should be the sentencing, not the perceived class aspect.

Does seem absolutely bonkers. Can you imagine:

Harlepool high street, 2am Friday.

Group of lads get into a heated debate.

One lad says, come on lets go and get the boys.

Group of  4 guys in balaclavas turn up in a Vauxhaul Corsa

Get out and beat a couple of guys up, breaking someone's neck

Most of the guys run away, ringleader gets caught. Goes to trial but it turns out he'd lose his delivery driving job if he gets jailed which would be terrible for his family. Refuses to name anyone else involved but is apparently of sound character because is auntie's posh mate says so.

Not any danger that a suspended sentence would get handed out.
