Second question. That's been my coffee table for 15 yrs. It was cut out of a tree and put in the living room where its remained, so it needed or got no treatment.
Now it's getting promoted to garden duty, what will give it a bit of protection from the elements without changing its appearance?

What wood is it, if oak or other hardwood, probably can leave as is.
Otherwise, oil or stain would probably be best, but that will change it's appearance.
Yeah seriously if it's oak it'll probably be OK but less durable woods will have lost a lot of their oils in that time so it'll just get wet and rot. So add some sort of oil - teak oil, Danish, linseed etc or a light oil based stain like sadolin or jotun. Most of them will change the finish a bit, I've used Danish oil on an iroko table I built a few years ago and it's been fine.
It'll still silver so whatever you do the appearance will change.
It was a softwood, prob douglas or similar. I dont mind a bit of weathering but its predecessor got a bit [i]too[/i] rustic
