My Twitter is full of people posting absolutely bonkers stuff about chemtrails and similar. Is it a thing again at the moment or is it because I have inadvertently clicked on a chemtrail post?
I think this may be the last straw for my Twitter account…
Probably left by Santa Claus 🦌
I binned X. It removes whatever faith you have left in humanity. Its a bloody sh*t fest.
Par for the course now. Gradually everyone I followed/interacted with has binned it and it serves up fruitbats to fill the space.
I left it ages ago after they let Tommy Robinson back on.

Yep, i wouldn't want to be in the same building as someone like him so I damn well dont want to be on the same SM platform.
Twitter is full of people posting absolutely bonkers stuff
All the info you need.
It's a cess pit.. All the cool kids are on mastodon now.. Not that I can be arsed with that either.. I only have a facebook account purely to keep in touch with people older than me.
I never see any of this stuff. Have you set it to "Following" or "For You"?
Have you set it to “Following” or “For You”?
It was indeed set to for you when the chemtrails stuff appeared. But I have never seen quite as much bonkers stuff on either setting.
I only view the 80 or so folk that I directly follow, don’t see any other posts but I imagine musk will find a way to **** with that soon
I never see any of this stuff. Have you set it to “Following” or “For You”?
This. I don't know why so many people seem to fail to grasp this. Apart from way more ads that i have no interest in, my feed hasn't changed at all
I've binned twitter but I get a ton more conspiracy theory stuff on other platforms than I used to. Partly my fault, every so often I'll see something and think lol, let's have a look at this mad shit- flat earthers and fake archeology especially. And so then the algorithms go "well you spend 99% of your time looking at <this stuff> but there's no point trying to drive traffic when it's things you look at already so instead we're going to feed you a ton of that 1% of different stuff you looked at recently"
Social media considers itself succesful if you do a lot of clickthrough and dwell time and posts, not for necessarily feeding you stuff you want to see. Every time they feed a sane person a conspiracy theory vid and they spend 10 minutes posting rebuttals and fury, it encourages them to show more sane people conspiracy theory vids.

Thats why I use private/anonymous browsing for when I am in the mood for diving down the rabbit hole.
Depending how bored/drunk I am and hence the risk of going really deep I turn on the vpn.
It’s not called ****ter, inhabited by ****terati and owned by the chief **** for no reason.
Or indeed, at all.
This. I don’t know why so many people seem to fail to grasp this.
You curate your own feed. A lack of quality control is not a failure of the medium any more than being subjected to watching Garage eat kangaroo penis whilst being egged on by two Geordie throbbers is a fault of television.
It fills the gap that’s left now he can no longer bang on about Bill Gates using covid vaccinations filling us all with 5G or something
Why not? There hasnt been any slow up to the nutters talking about 5g from what I can see. Although I guess they dont seem to be trashing the masts currently which I was grateful for visiting my brothers for the last couple of days. Phone signal at his used to really suck probably because the hippy idiots in the area sacrificed their first borns by attaching them to the phone masts.
This. I don’t know why so many people seem to fail to grasp this. Apart from way more ads that i have no interest in, my feed hasn’t changed at all
I have grasped it… but people who you follow do look at the other shite respond on it so you end up seeing it and as it’s a click away it’s all to easy to get sucked in to looking. I think it will have to go.
Gave up on it a while back, after years of being really into it. I don’t care if you can still actively “curate” the occasional gems from the ever larger pile of shit pushed your way… it’s just not worth the bother.
Generally, the only reason I go on Xitter is to troll RepubliKKKans, Christian Nationalists and other Fascists.
I have grasped it… but people who you follow do look at the other shite respond on it
Then I would suggest that you have not "grasped it." Stop following those people. That's the problem.
All the cool kids are on mastodon now
I think the truth is that the cool kids aren’t on Twitter any more, nor are they on any of the Twitter-alikes.
Bluesky (which would be my preference) has some promise but still not busy enough, Threads means passing yet more of your data to the Zuck and Mastodon is a bit geeky.
It’s awful, but still not as bad as Threads. Just had a look there and it’s just an endless stream of near-identical posts telling you how to re-tweet (re-thread?) stuff.
They both seem to attract an equal share of hard right ignorant pricks.
Twitter must be in its death throes. Any feed I select seems filled with gambling ads, drop shipped shite, porn ads, and dodgy crypto. They seem to get round any block by having it promoted by a blue tick user. Any legitimate advertiser who values their rep appears to have gone
Facebook/Insta can be as bad too TBH, Know afew anti-vax types that have jumped onto this bandwagon now. They were going mad at the nacreous clouds last week.

No really, I get it. There is a continuum that on one hand is an echo chamber, through a platform where you get to hear the various sides of a range of debates and then on to what we have now on, etc.
I have reached the point where I can’t be bothered with it any more because it’s a mess.
My original (admittedly vague and not very well posed) question was whether the chemtrails people have stepped up their efforts in recent weeks or whether X has just slid into chemtrails territory or whether maybe I had inadvertently stepped into the world of chemtrails ‘debate’ by clicking on one of the posts.
There is a continuum that on one hand is an echo chamber, through a platform where you get to hear the various sides of a range of debates and then on to what we have now on, etc.
So which do you want? You cannot hear a "range of debates" and simultaneously complain that it's "a mess" because people have opinions which you disagree with. It has (wholly predictably) taken a turn for the worse since Muskie got his paws on it, but the problem here is People.
I genuinely don't see the "gambling ads, drop shipped shite [whatever that is?], porn ads, and dodgy crypto" that jonnyboi describes. I would assume that I no doubt could, if I actively went looking for it or was daft enough to have "for you" set as my feed view rather than "following."
@cougar I flip between the two as I'm self aware enough to know I'd be living in an echo chamber otherwise. The point being if you go outside your carefully curated feed it's a disaster area. Can you imagine what it must be like for a new user?
Any legitimate advertiser who values their rep appears to have gone
They’ve deserted it in droves. Somewhat unsurprisingly big blue chip companies don’t want their adverts popping up on a now unregulated and unmoderated space next to posts from nazis, white supremacists, mad INCELs and bonkers conspiracy-theory nutjobs
Who’d have thunk it?
You could argue that ****ter was a cesspit when he bought it, but it certainly is now
I flip between the two as I’m self aware enough to know I’d be living in an echo chamber otherwise.
Fair.

Couldn't say as it ever crossed my mind TBH.

That’s the point and I’m not really complaining. I want to hear opinions I disagree with. For example, Twitter was useful for issues that are relevant to me for work… It was helpful to see what people were thinking, saying, etc. The signal to noise ratio (and the form of the debate) now means that this is no longer the case.
Sometimes I quite like the random shit the feed on instagram throws up, such as God Statham, martial arts, some of it's funny, some impressive, and there's something about not understanding a word they're saying makes it more fun to watch.
You curate your own feed. A lack of quality control is not a failure of the medium
So you're saying there's a way to stop it feeding you adverts and "you might like"s? If there's a non-paid way to do this, I'd be interested. Same with Facebork, my chosen feed is fine, but it puts loads of other shit in my face I have no ****ing interest in whatsoever. Not as much of a mess as X though, so if there's some smarter way to operate X, info appreciated.
or whether X has just slid into chemtrails territory
Given who they've let back on recently (Alex Jones) X is just sliding inexorably into a gigantic mush of Far Right idiocy.
but the problem here is People.
Nah, I was always happy to hear people with legitimate arguments with whom I just disagreed, now it's not 'people', X is fast becoming just a certain demographic as hoards of folks [who aren't actual nutters] leave in their droves.
Scrolling through a few pages today, ads appear after every 3rd, 4th or 5th post. As I'm scrolling anyway, I tend to barely notice them. No 'you might like's.
It's surely around 6 months now since the weekend that Twitter was (allegedly) going to die. I've not seen any difference in my use of it since before that.
Logged in on my phone - screen has 2 posts from people I follow, rest of the screen taken up by a video based advert. It's worse than STW! Then something from Joey Barton (??) I presume retweeted by someone I follow (can you stop seeing retweets?), yeah then 4 or 5 actually interesting things followed by another full screen video advert. It's utterly shite
No mention of Chemtrails though, so that's nice.
I don't get video ads either. All ads are simple text based stuff with links, so they are unobtrusive and easy to scroll past.
Just checked again - 11 posts down before the first ad appears.
I don't use Twitter or X and don't really buy into the whole Chemtrails conspiracy for numerous reasons.
However, over the last few months i have noticed practically every single day (in Surrey) that the day usually starts off nice and clear and then there seems to be lots of plane activity and these super thick contrails expand and expand outwards and turn what could have been a lovely day into a milky white sky. They're always in a grid format. It s a bit odd to be honest and i have't really noticed the level of pollution before. I know cloud seeding happens and i know that the Met Office talk about using aerosols at altitude etc so i can see why someone with either too much time on their hands or a fertile imagination could get carried away in believing that we're being sprayed with a cocktail of toxins, mould, nanotech, smart dust, other sci fi fabricated nasties, and metals and whatever else 'they*' are doing!!
*does anyone ever manage to find out exactly who 'they' are?!?! 😀
@desperatebicycle Facebook purity is your friend, only works on desktop browsers but makes it actually usable. Shame it still just shows me the same group posts in my feed rather than anything my actual friends have done.
Is the feed on X as ****ing annoying as instagram for hiding the one thing you actually want to see again, that you saw five minutes ago, in preference for showing you the same stuff its bombarded you with for 3 days and a load of other shite you're not interested in?
It is for me, but scotroutes has a different type of X to me, obviously.
It used to be fine, it used to only show me stuff I was interested in, but now it's complete garbage (on my screen)
Blimey, I think the chemtrails are making some of you quite narky.

I get a lot of EV posts on FB. Some are reviews, some are boneheaded anti-EV posts from Americans. You'd think that FB would be able to figure out which side of the fence I'm on.
Logged in on my phone
That might be your problem.
Chrome for desktop with uBlock Origin, I don't see ads on Twitter at all other than Follow suggestions in the right-hand bar and who looks at that. Facebook I have this link bookmarked, it puts your feed (mostly) back into chronological order.
Xitter is just crap.
You won’t find me arguing.
Blimey, I think the chemtrails are making some of you quite narky.
That’s why I won’t go on any threads on those sort of topics, unless I’m in a snarky, argumentative mood. Or I’m on here. Generally, it’s pointless arguing with complete idiots talking bollocks, they just wear you down with experience.
Instagram does suggest some good stuff to me at times. I'd hazzard a guess that this could interest some people on here, it's an old guy in a sawmill giving it a helping hand to get started. The sound is pretty awesome too on decent headphones.
If anyone wants to try Bluesky, DM me - it’s obviously invite code day.

About the only thing Muskrat hasn’t broken is that it is that your feed is still strictly chronological. If you use “For You”, you get only people you follow and in chronological order (with about 1 in 10 posts being an Ad).
Unless they’ve fixed it, the non-chronological nature of Threads is why I would never consider using it.
I’m not a New Year’s resolution maker but, thanks in part to the comments above, I have just gone cold turkey and closed my Twitter account and deleted the apps. Let’s see if I can last…

Literally the only time I've missed it is when someone's using it for news reporting, because you can only see the front page not the full thread. Luckily that's in decline and most places that used to rely on it have found alternatives but it's still annoying sometimes when you get an interesting link that's not interesting enough to go digging for.
Twitter is one of those things that seems invaluable while you're using it, but then you stop and it turns out that mostly all it's good for is twitter.
What I miss is customer services. Utilities, airlines etc. seem most responsive on X. Much more efficient than using the phone or a chat bot.
Musk charging stupid money for companies or organisations to use Xitter for emergencies has hamstrung many due to them coming up against post limits, one example being NERV in Japan, where help and warning information during the recent earthquake was prevented from being distributed for around thirty-forty minutes, right when it was most needed.
Xitter’s value is down 70% since Musk bought it, and set about systematically tearing it apart; not unlike a petulant, angry toddler.
