If you get some new followers is it the 'done thing' to follow them in return?

only if you're interested in what they say - have a look through their history and see.

I look at the profile of anyone who @replies to me or follows me. If they seem interesting, I follow them. If they don't, I don't.

Lots of spammers out there. Anyone that looks dodgy, block them.

For some reason I seem to be quite popular on Twitter with high profile sailors and the sailing community in general.

I've never been sailing nor met any of them in public toilets.

A quick "thanks for the follow @user" won't hurt either.

@xiphon - my Twitter client doesn't notify me of new followers - I get an email to my hotmail account, so only found out I had a stack of new followers when I went to check my emails.

Yeah. It's not Facebook.

Follow people you want to read. Don't follow those you don't.

If someone new follows me, I'll check to see if it's a 'real' account or a spammy twit, and block/report them accordingly. I've never seen anyone say "thanks for the follow", ever. Someone follows you, or not, good luck to them, it's for their benefit not yours.
