From an automated block paving machine?

I dunno, your guess is as good as mine. Either that or "you had one job" I suppose.

The pavement round here was replaced a couple of years back, really nice patterned blocks. There's an access panel which was also paved, and at some point it's been removed and replaced put back-to-front so the patter doesn't align. It gives me the gyp every time I walk past it.

My thought for this thread was "things that make you go argh" rather than this specific example.

I cant decide what's worse, that. Or contactors who dig it up then patch it with tarmac.

Ha! Yeah, I’m rather OCD about things like that; nearly forty years working in print and publishing where precision is paramount rather enhances it. I was trying to think of an example, and I’ve just remembered one from my last job:

“What letter spacing and kerning…?” [img] [/img]

A strip of a cobbled street near my office was dug up 6 months ago to put i services to some new flats.  I was convinced they were going to patch it with tarmac when they eventually relaid it.  I was pleasantly surprised when I saw them laying cobbles one day.  BUT... Rather than using the cobbles they took up, they've used different ones which don't match all the others.

Kill... Maim... Destroy...

Tarmac patches are worse.

Yeah, when Chippenham High Street was redone and pedestrianised, the road part was tarmacced, as it would be open to traffic at night, and the footpaths either side laid with York Stone slabs. So what do contractors do when they have to lift the slabs? Put Tarmac in their place! It might be if the slab breaks, but they shouldn’t be breaking the slabs! [img] [/img]

Not worse than slightly posh housing / business parks where the 'give way' line at junctions is made up a stone kerb.

Looks great when it's new.  Potential to KSI a cyclist or even motorbike once the tarmac has sagged an inch in a few years wen they turn across it in the dark.

I reckon there is a small cabal of highways maintenance workers around the country who have the the worlds best drives and patios made up from the block pavers and posh slabs they took up and replaced with tarmac.

Could there actually be black marked in them? When an order comes in the just find an unsuspecting high street, pretend to do some work but just replace the pavers with tarmac and sell them on?

I think I may be onto something here...... 😉

I once met someone who'd had their whole front drive stolen while they were on holiday

Is that a sign originally designed to traverse three windows?

I mean, it'd still be godawful but at least there's a reason for its existence.

Its on a sash window and I expect at some point it had fake Georgian astragals on it so the text was spaced around them and then later the astragals have been removed (or fallen off)

Actually - heres a good one.

Have a look at the door of Number 10 Downing Street. It's not a '10' on the door. (in fact when you image search it some images, particularly ones from the Stock Photo agencies have retouched the image and have 'improved' it to  erroneously show it with a '10')

Its a 1 and a capital O

The O isnt even the same height as the 1

Hmm, might need to write to The Digger and see how many Glasgow 'Hoods' have Caithness stone driveways...

Have a look at the door of Number 10 Downing Street. It’s not a ’10’ on the door.

It is a 10, but the 0 is painted at an angle as a nod to the original door that had a wonky 0 attached to it, see:

There’s a letter here from the architect who oversaw the restoration of Downing Street in the 60s, including replacement of the door - apologising for the typography on the door being beastly and blaming a contractor ignoring his instructions.

The letterbox is inscribed 'First Lord of the Treasury', the title held by every Prime Minister since Sir Robert Walpole.

Interesting I just assumed this was a Blair / Brown thing as didn't they swap so Blair lived in #11 which had a bigger flat with his family and Brown lived in #10?

Seems like I was taken in by the wonky number tale

ignoring his  instructions.

Interesting that the architect originally wanted numerals half the size, they would have looked weirdly small IMHO..........

Deliberately putting a misteak in something just to tease people seems a legitimate tactic.  Complete symmetry is boring.

I've always wondered about sign writers. I think it must be a "line of demarcation" thing. Your client can't spell but you can always fall back to "we wrote exactly what you asked for." If you correct it, you risk them complaining.

The remarkable thing about that inspection cover is that even a blind person could tell it was wrong.. If you're going to be incompetent, be inclusively incompetent.

Well the covers on the wrong way is just a funny wind-up. That slew of macadam instead of replacing pavers is plain wrong.

Whoever in the Council Highways department allowed that to happen should be demoted to litter picking and the contractors brought back to replace that with the pavers they took out at their own expense.

That’s downright disgusting. [img] [/img]

As a curtain maker it always irks when a blind, curtain or curtain rail/track is wonky, unhooked or the ends have come off the fitment.

So many places from posh hotels to holiday accommodation have this problem.  Many times hubby and I have stood on a wobbly chair to try and fix the problem.

I'm staring at a curtain now, where one hook has come away from the rail, but It would need a proper ladder job and it's not my house.
