Currently I am on the following package from Sky

Sky + basic package £24.50
Unlimited Broadband £10
Telephone Anytime calls £5

I'd like HD but dont want to pay an additional £10 a month to Sky as in all I'd be paying about £600 pounds a year to them!

So the other option is Freesat but you dont get any sports channels ie Eurosport, Extreme Sports or Men & Motors...

so whats peoples experience of both approaches, which is best value for money?

Ta

we had the same as you, ended up looking at every other option supplier and there wa sonly £2 or £3 quid in it!

we kept the sky box and pay a minimal fee to keep the sky + facility, so we have freesat but with + faclity

its amazing the channels you dont get on freesat though, so beware!

I'm just starting the painful search process and BT and Virgin can get no where near the prices of Sky. The reason for maybe switching to Freesat is because you get free HD channels (ok not many) that you cant get through your Sky + box.

I would miss the sports channels above though

I set the g/f on sky yesterday (her contract), with orders to get a decent deal and free replacement sky box or cancel. No arguements!

You won't get anything from the 'normal' operators, you have to talk to the cancellation team.
She got the full monty sky package for £30 down from £52, a free HD box (and HD channels, even though we don't have HD tv...). She's doesn't like 'wheedling' free stuff out of ppl but after 10 years as a customer a little paypack was due. Stick to your gun and argue the toss, and cancel if need be... just re-apply the day after if all else fails & they cnacel you...

You need to talk to "retentions." Generally, to do that you need to threaten to cancel. They're the only ones with any authority to do anything other than tell you to naff orf.

I'd suggest an opening gambit of "I want HD and you're too dear, so I'm leaving."

(AFAIK, etc)

z1ppy so you got the HD for free? ie not pay £10 per month as they suggest?

I rang the general 'Sky' number and spoke to option 4 'If your thinking of leaving us' one. Best he would offer me is £30 fee and £5 per month for 6 months to get HD....

Still cheaper as a package than Virgin

FD, that's the impression my g/f got... I dunno really I found that surprising too, but as we don't have HD tv we can't test it, but will ask the 'engineer' when he appears monday.

Hmmm maybe it's time, will need to prompt our tv supplier he needs to get a bigger screen (hand me down's a-go-go)

EDIT: Admittedly we upgraded to phone and broadband at the same time though were asking to go down to the basic tv package.

FunkyDunc - If you are on the basic package and are not planning to upgrade, then I dont think the £10 HD service is not worth it IMHO.

You only get 5 none subscriptions HD channels with the standard package

To get the 40+ HD channels you will need to upgrade your basic package as well, £££.

I'm in the same predicament, have you phoned them at all and asked for a reduction? They know that they are all pretty close but Sky are doing everything they can to get my dad back at the moment who has gone to freesatHD and talk talk phone and internet. He likes talk talk as customers services have been awesome to him apperently where as sky severed his broadband and wanted ton charge him for a service he couldn't use. Anyway I digress, the HD box is a tenner and for that you will get the box but they may charge you for install unless you opt for the install yourself option. You will get 40 free channells if you have those packages to begin with ie entertainment, kids, etc but they're only a pound extra anyway. Sports is too much for me to consider and the films are horrendously crap. Bearing in mind that there is sod all on tv at the best of times I would say invest in a blu ray player and freesat

Just spoken to Sky again and gone for a deal.

They are giving me Sky HD for £5 per month for 12 months and no installation charges or fees. If I cancelled my TV package I would have been charged £5 per month extra for Braodband/Telephone.

After this the guy assured me that in 12 months time I will still be able to get the Freesat type HD channels, just not Sky HD etc.

So to me this has worked out cheaper than buying a Freesat box and going through the hassle of changing all my service providers and all the usual cock ups that entails.
