We have tickets to watch England V Japan at Twickenham which is fantastic!

We are travelling in from Buckinghamshire and meeting friends in the west car park. Can you give me any advice on the best way to travel in? We were thinking of driving to a hotel on match day, using their car park and spending the night there... Any advice or recommendations very gratefully received.

Cheers

Train can get very busy and twickenham station is bijou, try buses.

Cardinal Vaughn car park across the road may still have places, convenient if you want to drive home ASAP.

If using the train make sure you are travelling west out of Twickenham and not east. Train queue earlier in the year was two hours plus after the Welsh game  to head back towards London. That said it was still nearly an hour to travel west and that must have been at least 2 1/2 hours after the final whistle. You'll be lucky to get a hote loxallyl this close to the game without paying big money. Eggham is where we stayed last time in the travel lodge, 15/20 min train journey and not a bad little town.

Been a few times and my sister/BIL have debenture tickets and go to pretty much every international - they always meet friends in Richmond and then walk in as it's always bonkers busy.

Coming out you can try the train from Twickenham but you really need to leave 10 mins before the end to avoid the biggest queues.  Last time I went I got on the [free] bus but it would have actually been quicker to have walked.

Best bet is to go down to one of the bars under the stadium, soak up the atmosphere/beer and leave an hour or so later..... doesn't really delay you much, if at all!

edit: Yeah the queues after the Welsh game were nuts Wrighty!

i went to the South Africa match a couple of weeks ago.

beware the train strike that is on.

the boy and I got the tube from town (having come into Paddington), and went to Richmond. Had a good lunch (a lot quieter than Twickenham, and more selection). Then walked it, about 35 minutes

Afterwards, did the same. The road follows the trainline, and even my son said 'god, I'm glad I'm not on that train'. They looked horrendously busy ,and obviously that didn't include the queues to get on.

Back to Richmond, waited two minutes for the waiting tube to leave. Had seats. Much more civilised.

As above - there's a train strike on SWR this weekend, so don't try and use the trains.

Advice on Richmond / Tube/ Walking is good - pint in the Turks before game. As is the post-match drinks in the bars.

Alternatively, people often park in our road (West of the green) and walk from there. Traffic is a nightmare whatever time you arrive/leave.

Whenever I go i stay drinking after in twickenham, even the bus queues are a nightmare.  Just make a long day of it, it would be quicker to walk to richmond or teddington than public transport.  The most local bars to the stadium are rammed, we aim for the white horse on the river in twickenham as its a bit hidden.

Dammit. I'd forgotten that it was on again this Saturday.

Park in Hounslow and walk south. It's not far. I'd avoid the Richmond route as everyone will be going in that direction. Windsor & Eton Riverside line is running the usual two trains per hour, so our road will be busy (Twickenham Park and Ride). Fetlham, Staines, Datchet, all possible,

But walking from Hounslow would be my choice.

This may be well out of date now. I last went 15 years ago. It was a regular day out until then. We always used to park in Twickenham Road Isleworth - pretty much due north of the ground. There used to be loads of free all day parking on the side streets then, around 20 - 30 minutes walk to the ground. There was a pub on that road, maybe a mile from the ground, we parked there a few times too.

We'd hang around a bit after the game, a slow walk back, into the pub, have something to eat, by then the traffic queues had gone, and it was nearly always pretty clear to get to the north circular.

Park in Richmond (St Margarets end) and walk from there. Maximum 2 miles and will take 40 minutes at most even if you have to park in the centre of Richmond. The weather is set fair for the weekend so a much nicer walk than last week!
