I don't know the numbers, but a reasonable guess is BBC radio gets a fraction of investment that BBC TV does, yet why is quality radio do much more engaging and enjoyable that telly?

Apart from Family Guy, Top Gear (usually), a good wildlife doc, there's nothing else I like on telly.

Yet quality programmes on the radio, and I'm mainly thinking R4, are just massively more abundant & enjoyable. Just this morning there was a totally random programme, interviewing some old ladies that were maids of honour at Liz's coronation. At the very least, it was insightful and entertaining, but it was really good.

There's variety, great comedy, excellent diction (I like proper spoken stuff like) and a variety of topics covered (again, thinking Radio 4)

When is telly like that?

I guess what I'm getting at is that my thinking is television is one of those things that's pushed on us as the preferred choice, but my guess is that if radio had more investment, people would sit and listen to the wireless at night and the sky subscriptions would get cancelled.

Or I may just be in 1940.

Although currently have the telly on we listen to ever more radio. I like Absolute for music and also a big R4 fan. R4 is not popular with the kids though.

R4 and R4 extra all the way. Some great sci fi stuff on R4 extra late on for the insomniacs as well as stuff like Round the Horn.

You reckon radio4 needs more investment? Aside from the fact that it's pretty good across the board, what do you think their listernship's attitude to change is? Shift the shipping forecast back by 15 mins and they'd take to the streets. Seriously, there seems to be a significant element of routine and tradition connected with listening to radio4 for many people - they might not appreciate the extra investment!

Not a telly man myself, but it seems with modern digital programming, tivo etc, you could watch quality tv 24/7 if you so desired.

Radio requires more concentration and investment rather than being just a TV passenger.
Radio 4 extra is superb and alway listen to it while drifting off ( Insomniac in the making)
6 music tonight has been incredible. So enlightening.

This is a bit out of date (its still has Jonathan Ross's wage bill on it) but it shows a breakdown of what costs what.

Look at how bogglingly expensive it is just to collect the license fee!

Radio 4 is a fricking bargain. All original content (as in all original content, not just talky bits in between the needle time) , all day, every day and little in the way of repeats.

and I'm mainly thinking R4

Back when he was still with Radio One Mark Radcliffe made an nice comparison between R1 and R4 along the lines of: 'On Radio 4 you have Oxbridge educated presenters work with scripts written and researched by Oxbridge eductated writers, produced and directed by Oxbridge educated directors and producers, all to produce one half hour programme, and then you get 15 - 20 of those programmes a day. On Radio 1 you employ someone on the strength of their haircut and give them an open mic. For 3 hours.'

R4 rocks! And I'm in Germany... Love listening to R4 and the GF enjoys the odd snippet, too.

+1 re. TV passenger comment.

Don't own a tv, but BBC Thonet such as Horizon, Timewatch, etc are also good value for money. Oh, and BBC comedy... HIGNFY.

Shame iPlayer isn't available outside the UK. I'd pay for an international service.

Just look at what's spent on R3 or R5, and compare with what R6 costs. The Beeb could double what they spend on 6, and take that off R3 and 5, but the Islington snobs would have a calf if a single penny was taken away from their radio.
Hell, how can £100m be justified for R4?

Never bought/owned a TV since i moved out'a my parents house back in the early 90's and i'm 41yrs old now so i think i'll continue to live quite happily without one and even growing up we stayed in the arse end of Argyll and Galloway so TV reception was pretty non-existant at the best of time thus i've sorta grown up with a healthy disdain for moving pictures.

I do love music and i'd defend R4 till i'm blue in the face, 6music is a godsend and the occasional nighttime music program on R1 is fine wi me as well, along wi a smattering of other digital/internet stations from around the world - in fact i have a couple of Tivoli radios throughout the house and i don't think i could live without them or my airport express and active speakers dotted about the rooms.

I don't have the patience to watch tv and the mindless adverts?....ARGHHHHHH!!!!!!, the few times i've been to the cinema i've got bored and left - it has to be a pretty good film to keep my attention span for a few hours...perhaps i have ADD?....

EDIT - I'd be more than happy for them to cut the R3 digital bandwith allowance and improve their other channels

While i would class myself as a fan of the BBC Home Service (i'm 25, by the way!), i don't very often find myself listening. I think this is symptomatic of their prime-time programming. On the rare occasion that i'm driving somewhere, i'll tune in and undoubtedly find myself listening to Woman's Hour or Gardener's Question Time or something...

I do enjoy their podcasts, though! I wish they'd release more stuff on podcast!

Shift the shipping forecast back by 15 mins and they'd take to the streets.

Never mind that, moving the Today Program could instigate a nuclear war!

Radio 4 has some stuff that you can take or leave really, if it interests you great if not it will interest somebody. Radio 5 had a good mix for me. However the BBC TV does produce some of the finest stuff anywhere int he world. Try the rest of the worlds TV before complaining too much. For every hit/classic there is a fail somewhere but that kind of goes with pushing things out there.

Was slightly surprised by the relative sizes of the radio amounts. Would have had R2 and R5 as larger than R4.

Maybe I should listen to R4 more.

Of everything on that diagram, it's BBC4 I watch the most. And ITV4 too.

Tend to listen to podcasts more these days. And Fags, Mags and Bags (still playing catchup, forget which radio channel that was on).

Europe 1 on the radio in the morning, radio when doing mundane things, TV in the evening; mainly French and German channels. The family are so keen on the BBC they didn't notice for over three months when the sat motor packed up and dish wouldn't turn to Astra 2. If FR3 or TF1 didn't work I'd get no sex till I fixed it.

Who needs TV or radio anyhow? Read the first page of chat forum threads and you get a good idea of what's happening in the world.

radio 4 is all genrated content round the clock - documentaries, news, science, comedy, drama, all written and recorded and produced as original content for the channel. Similarly Radio 3 has some really good content other than music - about 5 years ago I stumbled across the best documentary I've ever come experienced in my life (as someone who lives with a documentary maker and who hangs out at documentary festivals thats a tall claim) on R3 during a late night drive, I've never found out since what it was called or who made it but it was truly astounding.

Radio 6 is just a bit of talking between records - its nice, and I love it, but even really good talking between really good records doesn't actually cost very much to do.

That's certainly very true, and all the presenters are or have been successful enough in other fields, or are ego-lite enough that they are perfectly happy presenting and playing the music they obviously love. What I was thinking was that having more money would allow a lot more live music on the station, getting new and up-and-coming bands on to showcase their music more often, with longer sets.
Otherwise I'm perfectly happy with the station as it stands; I listen from 7am to 3.30pm, when I go home, and then sometimes late evenings as well.
I also watch lots of TV, but it's nearly always Sky+'d, so I can ffwd through the adverts. 😀

I live on the other side of the world and the only radio I listen to is BBC, mainly 4 because I am an old bit but a bit of 2 and 6 as well. I would happily pay for it.

Absolute radio , planet rock , zane lowe.

When im in the car its original 106 for the traffic announcements round abz and the musics no bad.

Radio 1 seems to have recruited an army of scott mills

The dont speak propperly , they act dumb and generally just make radio 1 into the sun news paper - im only 27 its a sad day when local radios better.

Still not ready for radio 2 though
