TV or projector

Hi,

I want to get a TV in the bedroom and have a clear wall at the end of the bed that is about 150cm x 80cm.

We werent going to have a TV in there to start with but are changing our minds. The room would look a lot better if there wasnt a massive TV on the wall as it would sit above the mrs dressing table, so thought about a projector.

The light pendant is only about 150cm from the wall, so a projector (if ceiling mounted) would need to be quite close. Although it could sit above the headboard if descrete enough? Thats about 3m away.

I dont want to spend a fortune, would want a built in speaker I think, would want to plug a HDMI firestick into it.

Am I better with a TV or projector? If a projector what do I need to look for /  any recommendations please!?

Thanks

We don't often watch TV in bed but I've got a samsung freestyle 2 projector that I use if we do want to. The fact it's easily portable and can be battery powered means we can use it in any room. Project onto a wall, ceiling or screen and take it with us if we go away. It has all the apps we need on it can ariplay or chromecast to play things from any device. Definitely worth a shout if you don't want something permanently in there.

If you get a projector, make sure you get the right sort for the space – I think that, at 3m, you'd want a short-throw one.

Depending on PAF (partner approval factor) and budget something like a Samsung frame might work, compromise between an quality picture TV and a big picture frame. For a bedroom, perhaps a discreet soundbar would be enough as the speakers are probably pants. It doesn't sound like an ideal situation to have a projector set up in, but you might be happy enough with an ok projector and the wall vs an ultra short throw lazer projector and a screen (which is where my head goes when you say projector - but I'm a fussy oled owner with a surround sound setup and no tv in any other room!).

Projectors are intrusive, need wiring run up to the ceiling (so a fiddly install), and their fans mean they're noisy - you don't really want to be using one at low volumes in a bedroom

There are a few people making 'picture frame' tv's but I'm not sure how much light/heat they give out or power they consume - are you supposed to leave them on all the time?

but also various options for hidden TVs - these people seem to mount regular sets behind a one way mirror but I thought I'd seen ones factory made before.

but I’m a fussy oled owner

No fussy OLED owner would ever recommend a Samsung Frame to anyone 😉 If a flush wall mounted TV that actually has acceptable image quality is needed, then an LG G-series OLED is what you want.

This times 1000x. Speaking as someone who bought a Samsung “the frame”, promptly returned it, then got an LG G-series instead.

How good are these projector tvs in the dark?  I would have thought they wouldnt give a crisp picture in a dark bedroom

we've gone for a samsung frame tv in our room for exactly this reason - only the 43" as anything else would dominate the room

I'd be looking at ultra-short throw projectors and have it on a stand/table by the wall (so nothing to ceiling mount), they were pricey though but not looked into them for a couple of years.

projectors are generally massively expensive compared to tv's? and don't come with any native apps? require some other sort of source?

For convenience you want a TV, light sources in bedrooms are no for projectors.

if the tv bothers you much . build a cupboard around it and open the doors to watch it

Or get one of those beds with a built-in TV.

On another note – we have a TV in our bedroom but I don't think it has been switched on in about five years.

Bragging?

Hah, no. I wish that was the reason.

Disagree with the views of the TV snobs on the Frame TVs.

They're perfectly acceptable picture wise and no TV can be installed more discretely with the separate connect box for all the connections plus there's just a tiny transparent wire going to the set.

We've had a 65" in our sitting room for 2yrs & one friend of ours only realised it was actually a TV a couple of weeks ago!

Ideal for a discrete bedroom install.
