We got rid of the Virgin package we had so now have reliable broadband, great customer service and the fastest up and download speeds available. This also meant we got rid of the TV box which gave 900 channels of TV programmes to scroll through endlessly looking for something to watch. We now have Freeview, Netflix and Amazon free stuff.

The problem is my wife actually likes scrolling through 900+ channels of crap looking for something to watch and hates the Netflix et al approach of you choosing what to watch. I tried to show that you can scroll through the choices but that doesn't wash as she cannot watch a couple of minutes of each and then skip to the next program.

While her approach of watching 2 minute snippets of hundreds of programs before complaining there is nothing on and watching a repeat of Vera annoys the life out of me, I do sort of understand what she wants.

Is there an option like Freeview but with more channels?

Netflix plays a short snippet preview as you scroll though.

One of the basic virgin/sky TV packages? Otherwise netflix has a random option....

I know about the Netflix snippet but then I get told there are too many options and they are all films. The random option just gives here the choice of cars, bikes or restoration projects based on my viewing habits.

I will see what the cheapest Sky option is but as said, Virgin screw you unless you buy their broadband too

Isn't most of the stuff on Netflix so lowest common denominator/US crap...?
Hate scrolling through Netflix.

I'm not sure if this will work for your situation, but I find it's easiest to let my wife decide what we watch.

I would literally sooner not watch TV than spend time scrolling through stuff or channel surfing.

This does mean I need to block-book TV access for watching the Downhill, but I can live with that.

Loads of original stuff on there. Excellent selection of foreign language stuff as well, been watching French dramas for the last few months (working on my French).

Step one would be to make her her own profile so her viewing habits don't mean you start being recommended crap she is recommend stuff she actually wants to watch.

Oh for the days of 3, no 4 err then 5 channels and being forced to either watch something new you wouldn't have thought of watching, or giving up and getting outside or getting the scrabble board out.

I don't care about what is on and rarely watch it, just sit there planning stuff while MrsWCA scrolls up and down 999 channels for an hour or so before deciding there is nothing on worth watching.

The trouble is that because the cost of broadband has dropped to just £25 quid she is saying I reduced from 999 channels of shit she didn't watch to 200 channels of shit she doesn't watch to save me money and I don't care about her watching TV

I did the same as you about 3 years ago, the base Virgin package as it was at the time was basically Freeview anyway and even then 99% of it was shite.

I now watch much less tv. Put iPlayer on last night to watch Blazing Saddles again and that was the first time it's been used for anything except kids tv in months.

We were talking the other day about the loss of shared cultural experiences now we have TV on demand eg everyone would watch 'The spy who loved me' or whatever on Xmas Day etc so you'd all be talking about it. I think we were discussing ET on a cafe ride the other week and everyone went to the Cinema and saw it at the same time etc.

Similarly out kids won't know the excitement of watching something once a week for 32 weeks, like Lost Cities of Gold. It'll be done in a couple of binges. Sad times.

New wife?

There's nothing but crap on TV 95% of the time so we've ditched sky and just use Freeview with Netflix, prime and YouTube.
Job done.
Life's too short to spend time scrolling through crap.
