I'm moving into a new house. We have no TV, no aerial, no internet......nowt.
What we do have is a socket in the middle of the wall next to a co-ax and HDMI outlet. The HDMI exits neat the skirting, and all of this is flushed in.
If I buy a Smart TV and have internet installed, can it operate in a Wi-Fi mode? I simply want to avoid cables.
Also I'm pretty certain that there is Virgin cable outside.
I expect the coax is the Virgin feed. Smart TVs should be fine on WiFi (although always double check a model before you buy...). There is/was an issue with LG TVs with WiFi dropping unless you turn off one of it's settings (can't remember what it's called but something do so with it scanning for LG screenshare devices which can interfere with the WiFi)

I expect its not virgin - if its in the middle of the wall it'll be an aerial lead - the hdmi would be for putting feed from an external source (ie virgin, blu ray) to the tv.
The tv can work on wifi for on-demand sources, use that with freeview hd for a decent selection
We have a TV in our kitchen that we operate via wifi only and its fine - we just installed all the apps (ie iPlayer, ITV Hub) for the main channels along with YouTube and Netflix. However I wouldn't want to use it for my main source of viewing as it can be a bit frustrating having to quit one app and launch another rather than just having a TV Guide to browse through.
However, if you are going to get Virgin internet installed, you could simply get a TiVo box with the package you buy and have that plugged in too. Our last two houses haven't had old school aerials - TV has always been via internet > box > TV
