Right how's this work. Want to put freeview into the kids bedrooms. Currently no ariel on the roof coz we have sky. So to put freeview in the rooms I'll be putting an ariel back on the chimney, will I then need two cables from the new ariel, one into each room so they can watch different channels or one and some kind of splitter? Thanks in advance.
Yes.. but you might be able to get away with mounting the aerial in the loft if you have a good signal.
Re the splitter - you will need one of course since the aerial itself has only one wire coming out of it. I think with weak signal you need a powered splitter, otherwise not.
Yes to which one grips? Splitter or separate cables??
Splitter - how would you make it work without a splitter?
Two cables as in sky+ style?? This is one area I haven't got a dickie bird!!!!
you need
1 aerial
1 2 way setback amp or splitter
run 1 cable from aerial into input port on splitter/amp
run 2 cables to 2 separate tv's or freeview box's.
1 cable from ariel. Plus indoor splitter - possibly powered depending on signal.
Cheers lads. Screwfix for ariel and bits??
have a looky here it goes into all sorts of setups.
Personally I would always go aerial on roof, cabled into the loft then split (powered if needed) and distribute to wherever you need.
First, as said above, try a loft aerial first it may be ok. Next you need a £3 aerial splitter from you local Maplins. One cable from the aerial down to one TV, if the signal is OK put in splitter and second cable to second telly. Still both OK? If not then a signal amp may be needed in the original down lead.
Edit Sorry too slow

I seem to remember you're a builder from other posts? If so register with electricfix.
Also RSonline is the place for everything electrical -> electronic
Quick question guys, my aerial looks like it needs a mains supply to it?
It's in the loft, and when the house was resided it looked like the power cable has been cut. Makes no odds really as were on sky multiroom, but why would an aerial have a power supply and where would the feed have been taken from?
An amplifier will be powered. There's different ways of powering them (from the TV end or at the aerial end).
This is really a great site for info on aerials/splitters and amps.

Its what I used to spec, purchase and help install my set up for the barn.
Each tv will need a freview box, and as i found out, if using a splitter or amplifier, Freeview boxes from ARGOS, dont work with amplifiers, as the chap from customer services tolld me, 2 visits back to argos to get replacements, and an argument with a jobswoirth there, about them selling stuff that doesnt work, and that they know doesnt work resulted in a refund.
Oh anything called Bush or Alba is argos,s own make,
Just done it here, we went for two loft aerials, drop the wires down into the bedrooms. No splitter/junction etc. Cheap aerials from Argos worked well here.
Gonna buy tellys with built in freeview! Managed till now to not put one in their rooms but as the little girl is 10 after Christmas we thought it was ok. However as I'm a builder I need to start the ariel work this far in advance or it will not be completed for the new Christmas telly's. Heres your present fr Santa now watch some static!!! 😯
You can't watch static on Digital.
This should give you more detail on what kind of reception you can expect,.

If a lot of people in the are have chimney aerials, that's a pretty good sign that loft aerials aren't going to cut it. With new cabling to two upstairs rooms you're probably not going to need a masthead amp. (IMHO) I'd just run the two aerial sockets in series.
