So, since I have managed to gain my own space in the house I have found that I no longer need TV, and TBH I spend to much time away from the family enjoying the P&Q as I just can't stand the crap they watch on the box, this has resulted in a 'me & them' situation. My daughter walked in earlier & asked if she could join me & read a book which I was very happy for her to do so, but I seemed to of messed up as I asked her to close the door behind her & she took this as me not wanting to interact & promptly dismissed herself to her bedroom.
I fear I have turned into some sort of old fart that only want's things my way, so should I embrace the crap on TV or get over myself & enjoy the newfound P&Q?

Cheers.

Possibly look for some kind of middle ground?

Failing that, get a family who have a decent taste in televisual viewing. As there IS crap on telly, but there is also a lot of decent stuff on there.

I would say that sometimes it might be best for you to occasionally sit down with your family and suck up a bit of shit tv.

And find some stuff you all might like watching. There is loads of interesting stuff, just try and find something that fits the bill for everyone ? Might not be easy depending on the demographic spread 🙂

There's always the option of ignoring the crap they watch and only watching the things that you want to watch, when you want to watch them, thus also allowing time to have P&Q to read a book, or listen to music.
This might sound like a radical solution, but it can work.
Give it a try, you never know, you might find it works.
It's worked for me for years, it's what PVR/Sky+ boxes were designed for... 😉

I will sit down & watch a family film, or a decent drama, but Holby city really holds no interest for me & that is about as highbrow as it gets, unless you count any number of reality shows as highbrow?

🙂

I've lived tv less for nearly 6 months now, best thing i ever did.

i occasionally watch something of interest on iplayer, that's it.

i'm currently illustrating, writing a comic book - lot more interesting and rewarding than sitting and watching crap all night long.

Again, you don't have to watch the crap.

I'd say I watch about 1-2 hrs tv a week aside from the news. Radio is great. I do catch up on the odd thing on iPlayer.

Laptop or tablet. You do what you want on that in the living room while they watch crap. It's what I'm doing right now. Of course, my wife is watching some program about 1950's news programs on TV called the hour and the women are all dressing in these great silky evening dresses. I'm feigning disinterest.

Crap TV is as bad as sweeping generalisations.

There is interesting and mind blowing stuff on there. Iplayer, PVR etc have changed things alot.

Having a media PC changed the way I consume media these days. Watch what I want when it suits me, I used to watch the thick of it while having lunch working from home or something else when it's a crap wet cold day or you just want some easy entertainment.

The Hour is quite good, I have stuck with this series, did not manage that with the first one.

Watched The Fear this evening. Surprised me to find something interesting without resorting to BBC4.

I think this can be more serious than it appears at first.
A wife who watches junk on TV (reality TV, soaps, etc) and won't take steps to change needs to take a good look at herself and what her marriage means to her. If it's just the kids, they'll get over watching that kind of mindless crap and move on, but a grown woman needs to sort herself out.

Now, I agree with that but wading through the dross to find the good stuff is often tiresome to the extent that I probably have less than 1 hour of recorded TV stored waiting for the opportunity.

To the OP, The wife and daughter watch what they want till 9, then I choose 9-10
I just busy myself reading usually if I can't stand what's on.

I find it puzzling that you've married someone and suddenly she's turned into someone who watches loads of crap TV. How does that happen without one or both parties ignoring each other for a prolonged period?

I hate crap TV. I love great TV. There's an awful lot of the latter, more than enough to keep you amused. Does anyone else like quiz shows like Pointless, Only Connect and University Challenge that set your brain working and stimulate conversation?

Yep, like to chill out after work to Pointless. I guess the big difference is that I don't care if I don't watch it.

Crazy isn't it? I mean, it's not as if most of us here disappear out into the countryside for extended periods doing an equally pointless activity while our wives sit around not seeing us is it?

I thought he was in his room reading a book...

"Equally pointless" though? Really? Staying fit, healthy and happy is as pointless as watching 'I'm a Celebrity'?

Exactly, I don't see why people struggle with this concept so much.

If something is crap, switch channels or switch off.

Watching junk TV, if it makes you happy, is very good for you. The health benefits of being relaxed and happy are significant.

To answer the OP - no, not all TV is junk. Some of it is pretty damn good.

Does the Radio Times count as a book?

A divorce back in May meant she kept the TV. It was what she lived for, after all: Bargain Hunt, Homes under the hammer, X factor, I'm a celebrity, endless cookery programs... mind-numbing, soul-destroying carp like that.

Anyhoo, poverty and a desire to not become a divorcee couch potato eating cheesy wotsits in his underpants meant I chose not to get a TV. And I haven't missed it all these last 7 months. Even with the Olympics and the best TdF in decades, I have got by perfectly well. I had found that most of what was on TV was women-oriented and/or carp anyway. Think I came to that revelation when I discovered I was watching a (famous?) hairdresser whisk an egg in front of a spellbound studio audience.

iPlayer, 4od etc on a laptop with the sound wired through my 30year-old hi-fi is perfectly good for those odd occasions when I feel the need for some comedy or a documentary.

(As a footnote: of the seven of us in the office here, three don't have TVs).

Don't kid yourself. There's a hell of a lot of shite in printed form out there, just as with telly.

I don't really have a problem with crap tv, I just tune it out. For example, I usually go straight to BBC2 then to 3 and 4 when channel surfing. And before 7pm I don't even bother at all.

It's really not hard.

Perception is an interesting thing. It changes dependent on the observer.

I was watching Dara O'Briain's Science Club the other day.

A 1 hour program on a mainstream channel at prime time devoted to science.

A couple of weeks back I was watching Andrew Marr's History of the World

A 1 hour program on a mainstream channel at prime time devoted to history

Tommorow I'll be watching Supersized Earth

A 1 hour program on a mainstream channel at prime time devoted to technology and engineering...

And this is just on the BBC, lots of interesting stuff on Discovery Nat Geo etc etc.

Its not TV that's the problem its what you choose to watch that's the problem

Try having my MIL to say for two weeks over Christmas. The TV goes on at about 9 Am and stays on until bed time, very LOUD and all absolute carp. Meanwhile the wood-burner is lit and she likes nothing better than to bumble over and chuck on another log or two, so not only does the meter whizz round and round very fast but also our log store gets about 50% depleted. Bless her.
