Lucca

San Gimignano

Volterra (watch out for vampires)

I wouldn't do a specific trip to Certaldo, but if passing by I'd take a trip up the funicular to visit the old town and stop for an Aperol or a beer.

hidden gems to visit?

At Pisa
We walked through the glorious Tuscan pine forest at Natural Park Migliarino San Rossore. The beach was lovely, almost deserted. The smells in the pine forests were amazing. The wildlife brilliant - wild boar, roller birds and cicadas.

Florence -
the Piazzale de Michaelangelo and aiming adjoining church fabulous, not the queues for the Doma either. The area below the Piazza was also very trendy, different to the tourist centre.

Sant'Ambrogio Market was great, really fabulous food and atmosphere. Next to it was Gilda Bistrot which was *the* best food like nonna made. Handwritten menu, no English spoken, Tony the 70yr old American charmer was on hand to help us out. Lovely food.

Vivoli as well as being oldest gelato place was the best. We extensively tested throughout the week at various Gelato.

Mrs_oab is into her pottery, so I picked up a gift from http://www.sbigoliterrecotte.it/ The owner gave us a quick tour around.

I was there for work. The training room for the week had this view out the loo, our main room was the university observatory.

As others have said Lucca is worth a visit but you are too late for the Summer music festival.

+2 for Lucca, wander the city wall.

Pisa city I didn't spend much time in, it's just a city. The walk above in a forest sounds lovely though.

Enjoy the driving! Currently in Italy and the standards don't seem to be improving.

Lucca +3.

Pisa is good for the tower/cathedral but didnt like the town itself.

we really liked pistoia, between lucca and florence, lovely little town.

theres also a lovely scenic little village/town called montecarlo near pistoia with cracking 360 views and a cracking wine-tasting vineyard. i could dig out the details if thats your bag.
