Do I need a preamp? Plugged it into an amp and its tinny and quiet?

Plug it into the 'phono' input rather than a line input.

Does your AMP have a phono stage? Or are you plugged in to standard RCA inputs?
They need a moving magnet phono stage.

No phono - only aux1 or aux2?

You can get a phono pre amp and connect it to the amp via tuner, aux etc.

How much do you want to spend. I got a Beresford branded TC-750LC for about £40. But can be had from ebay, its a generic model I think. Had it plugged into my old Arcam amp with rega rp1 and sounded great. Got a new amp with a great phono stage now, so it was obsoleted. Oh and managed to sneek an RP3 into the house too at the same time.
Rega do a preamp as well. Fono MM is meant to be good. But its around £200

I've got reasonably decent kit, a Michell Engineering turntable and quality amp, I've no complaints with the cheap Behringer preamp/phonostage at about £20 off Amazon.

I use this with a Cambridge Audio amp:

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Behringer-PP400-Microphono-Compact-assorted/dp/B000H2BC4E/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1457130942&sr=8-1&keywords=phono+pre+amp

Comes with a power supply and has a ground. Never missed a beat and does exactly what it says it will
