Hi I'm renovating a house and need some gas advice.

At the meter the the 'off' leaver is horizontal to the vertical gas pipe. So there is no gas going into the meter. Its been this way for the last 6 months.

Does this mean its perfecitally safe to remove the pipes coming out of the meter?

on the gas valve tere will be a line cut into the valve, when this line is horizontal gas is off.

But you do know you need to be gas safe registered by law to reconnect the gas pipes and re presureise the system, or bang and your house is gone in a puff of smoke and flame.

You need to be Gas Safe registered to alter/ repair/ disconnect/ reconnect or test any part of a gas installation. I should know 😉

Ok will check that.
No not going to go any fitting - yes a pro will do alll that work. Eventually the meter will be moved and replaced - all new pipes, all new appliances.

Its that I've been told that the gas is off and have been asked to remove all the copper pipes. Just making sure how safe 'off' actually is - call me untrusting but...

and it may well be a good idea to secure the stop tap in the OFF position when you disconnect the pipes just incase somebody switches it back on, or catches the lever.

Do not remove the lever.

Also if you remove the pipes, and just leave the meter-intlet valve shut, you've just left what's known as an 'open end' - in effect if the gas were turned back on at the valve it'd still be live. That'd be a RIDDOR reportable offence and the HSE should be informed.

Get a qualified Gase Safe engineer to cap off the meter. Or if you're removing the meter the transporter (your supplier) will come and remove the meter.

You should then be safe to remove the pipes, make sure you take them to your local 'recycling centre' too 😆

Edit; dont take chances with gas, it's really not worth it!

You can't just start leaving open ends. The meter outlet needs capping by a pro.

project - good sugestion - will do

Though I'm not sure if i should even touch it now? - I'm assuming that person I'm helping doesn't want to pay for a gas engineer to 'rip out' the old pips just put the new ones in.

mmm.. rock.. hard place.

Tried googling for this info but got nowhere. Thank for all the good advice.

I'll make sure the meter get capped asap before we touch a thing.

Not really. It's covered under the gas installation and use regulations. You need to be a proper gas man to disconnect the supply.

Rock = I'm getting paid to take out the pipes.
Hardplace = Not sure how safe it is (hence asking here)

That comment doesn't apply anymore - will refuse to touch it until it gets capped.
(smoko break will be interesting tomorrow...)

Good man.

I'm pretty sure whoever is doing your work will cap it free of charge.

National Grid would cap it if they came out to do a check and there was an escape. You're talking minutes of work here.
