Where's the shut down option to do it properly rather than just pressing the power button?
It's been a long day 😕
EDIT: please
Alt+F4 from the desktop?
Magic, cheers!
Put the mouse pointer to the top right corner and you'll get the side menu appear, click on the settings cog at the bottom and you'll see Shutdown.
Ctrl-Alt-Del might also so a shutdown option, can't remember of top of my head.
hover over the bit of the screen that brings out the "charms bar"*. Hit settings, hit power, hit shut down.
*bottom right usually
I made a shortcut for the front page of my mum's touchscreen thing, and I'm a moron so it must've been simple enough
Aren't you supposed to be able to "just press the power button" on a Windows 8 machine?
I just flick the screen in from the right, and menu appears...but that's touchscreen.
Classic shell download puts the start button where it's meant to be.
Pop a horticulture on the menu bar, just like win98. I sorted all our work computers to start in desktop, with this button, and it really helped staff get on with it quicker.
Thank you STW. I've had my laptop for a year now and have never managed to switch it off until now.
Windows key + X pops a little "Start Menu Lite" which has all the useful stuff you can never find on it. From memory, I think Shut Down is on there.
Step 1: Uninstall Windows 8
Step 2: Install Windows 7
...
Upgrade to 8.1 (which you should do anyway, it's free) and shut down appears when you right-click where the start menu used to be on previous versions of Windows.
This is apparently seen as an improvement by those who still think "stop" should be on a start menu 🙄 .
There's also an off-button on the tiles screen on 8.1. Or use one of the methods above which still work (ctl-alt-del, charms menu, Windows-X, off-button etc).
Step 1: Uninstall Windows 8
Step 2: Install Windows 7
Step 1 - learn a few new things (time approx 5 mins)
Step 2 - relax
Pretty certain on 8.1 you right click on the desktop "start button" and you can shut down from there, very similar to how you do it on previous windows machines.

I'm not sure that putting "stop" under Settings (as poonprice describes) is any more logical 😀
(Besides in more recent Windows it isn't a "Start" button anyway, it's just a Windows logo)
In W7 at least, you can specify what the power button does. It defaults to Hibernate or something wooly like that IIRC, I generally redefine it to be a full shutdown. In which case, the answer to "how do I shut down properly" then becomes "do what you're doing already, hit the power button." I'd be amazed if W8 didn't have the same functionality.

This.
No, not that at all.
In Win8 press the windows key then type 'change what the power button does'. That takes you to the menu where, well...I'd be amazed if W8 didn't have the same functionality.
That is pretty much the best way to do it as well imo, but I pretty rarely fully shut down the machine any more. I rather press the power button and let it sleep as the shut down/start up process is much faster.

I'm amazed I ever managed to find it.
And is it just my Vaio, or does "shut down" only put it into sleep mode.
To turn it off you need to do "restart", which sometimes restarts and sometimes puts it in a coma.
The whole W8 interface is a joke compared to W7, ****ers.
