I saw a bit of Nigel Slater in Turkey on the tv over the weekend and some of the stuff he was eating looked very tasty and moreover simple to make (pizza style thing and walnut honey cake thing etc).

Does anyone know of a decent cookbook that covers this kind of Turkish food?

Thanks

Sweet food = pastry folded over and over again with honey and sugar. Occasionally shredded with more sugar, honey and sometime almond paste added, maybe some more sugar and some more nuts and icing sugar, and honey and....

Any book by Claudia Roden, got me into proper turkish food, before I ever went to Turkey.

This might be worth a look - a mixture of Persian and regional dishes. It has a good recipe for Lahmacun which are a Turkish pizza thing with a lamb topping. Also a desert section with several pastry / nut / honey type affairs.

Good book, introduced me to some amazing dishes I'd never heard of. Mirza ghaesemi is a staple in our house now - it sounds like it would be rank but all combines together into something way better than the parts (basically the flesh from roasted aubergines mixed with an industrial quantity of garlic, some tomatoes and strangely a few eggs). It all blends up into a rich sauce that just tastes incredible. Middle Eastern food in general is great, so many brilliant dishes.

Yep, came in to recommend Sabrina Ghayour, we've got a couple of her books.

+1 for Persiana. It really is a great cook book, some really fantastic and also easy recipes. Some of my favourite recipes in here are the salads, the chicken and artichoke is my favourite.
You'll need a few basic ingredients, sumac & pomegranate molasses etc. but they are easy to obtain from places such as sous chef.

I came here to recommend Persiana as well 🙂

Also, for a quick win, my mum sent me a recipe for Zhug:

Char grilled pepper (from a jar)

Fresh coriander

Garlic

Cumin seeds

Poemgranate molasses

Chilli (optional)

Whizz it all up in a blender. Takes two minutes to make and is just great with Halloumi or Chicken, and probably anything else you can grill.

Poemgranate molasses

Not the easiest thing to find in a small market town in my experience....

And to the OP - I just use the BBC Good Food site, it seems to hit the spot for most regional foods 🙂

Thinks about making Iskender (sp) tonight 🙂

King Yotam Ottolenghi of Islington. His cooking is very much based in the middle east. fantastic stuff and a book of his called jerusalem (i know... not turkey) is highly recommended

I can get pomegranite mollases here in northern sweden... i reckon you can too!

if it was the same series he was also in Lebanon and I’ve been meaning to seek out those recipes too. It seems like there should obviously be a book to accompany the series - surprised that’s not the case.
