Broken finger means a bit of enforced time off the bike. Am starting to resort to the turbo just to keep the legs turning, but by god, is it soul-destroying ...

Don't talk to me about a smart turbo, Zwift etc, not interested in cycling indoors for any reason and as soon as the finger heals I'll be back outside.

But for the next 3 or 4 weeks, am looking for ideas of stuff to watch to help pass the time.

Not interested in box sets, series' etc, but just a few nice, interesting things to watch. Ideally with an outdoorsy theme (not necessarily bike related), fr'instance I've recently watched "As you Lake it", the UK Mountain Biking story, and that one of the guy who cycled across Canada (that was mentioned on another thread). Anything between 30 and 90 minutes really. Or, the kind of films shown on the Banff film series that (used to?) tour the country ... (maybe that's where I should start ...)

Cheers.

ooooh, we bought some rellies a pass for the Kendal Mountain Festival - they get to watch all the films form the KMF streamed. Maybe that would be up your street? I think it was a 30 day pass or a year subscription... SWMBO tells me it was £30 for the 30 day or £100 for the year

Oooo good shout there kahurangi. Prompted me to look up when the Banff mountain film festival is on. Used to go down to the local art house cinema for these movies from outdoors documentary makers. Brilliant stuff. Now you can go to the festival online of course. From 14 Jan. https://www.banff-uk.com/virtual

There's a bike touring thing on Youtube I watched ages ago. been meaning to re-visit it. Mark Beaumont I think his name was, Scottish chap, riding across continents. Then there's 'Tally Ho' which was recommended on here which is great. About boat building but don't let that put you off.

How about going for a run so you can still get outside?

I'm doing that too. Well, limping, as I seem to have done something to my knee as well.

And dog walking. So, it's not dire. But cycling is my fave ...

GCN turbo videos are worth a look if you want any kind of workout.
Where Dreams Go to Die is running based but an excellent watch.

Theres's loads of mountaineering stuff on YouTube, I watched most of it when I was trapped in the aching-eyes-wide open misery of covid insomnia in 2020. To be honest though, your best bet is some sort of structured interval session and loud music of your choice. If you're just sat there spinning mindlessly in zone 2 while watching adventure porn you'd probably be better of going for a walk or a gentle jog.

You dismiss Zwift but you can take out a sub for a month. For not much outlay it may be worth a look.

Here's a playlist I made of the films from the 2020 Banff list.. one day I may even get around to watching them! Maybe next lockdown...

I used to do the old Sufferfest videos on a dumb trainer which were OK.. they're subscription only now but there are plenty of similar ones on YT. Also stuff like FPV of the Swiss Epic etc. which looks great and draws you in!

I used to get fed up of turbos but recently started using Rouvy and listening to the radio

2hrs 20mins the other day riding a route virtually in Derbyshire

You can get Rouvy free for 4 weeks

Or is it not a smart trainer ?

How about doing some structured training on the turbo? Give me an interval session where I've got to ride hard AND mentally work out how many repetitions of 15/15 on/off I've done and an hour goes quickly.

GCN+ have loads of documentaries that might be up your street. Lots of cycle travel stuff as well as some cool cycling history

Does a broken finger need to keep you off, just substitute gnarr temporarily for bridleway and country lane cruising. Better than staring at a wall.

Yeah, it does at the minute. Finger is splinted and strapped and I can't hold the handlebar with any strength let alone change gear/brake with any reliability.

Cheers for the suggestions all. Some good ideas to go at ...

Recommend what you use..... Wahoo SYSTM (used to be Sufferfest) has some great content. There is a real mix of sessions, I just filtered on "Inspiration videos" and there are 53 of them ranging from 20 mins to a couple of hours in length. These are largely documentary type videos, all cycling related, you don't need a smart trainer to enjoy them.

Lot's of other good stuff there too, for example Mike Cotty guiding you through mountain routes. You can get a 2 week trial with SYSTM, you just need a tablet or laptop/PC.

Skip all the guff and go to where it overviews the different cycling channels:

There's some good docs on Prime about a guy called Hue Jack Bressington. They're in Welsh, but subbed. He does silly ultra running mountain races. Docs re called 47 Copa and the other ins something like Dragon back (in work can't check)

Would recommend Wahoo SYSTM too, you can make it into full on hard turbo training, but as above, there is a lot of GCN content there and you can ride along with a favourite pro, you can do full on Sufferfest or you can watch documentaries. I bought a Wahoo trainer and got subscription free for a year, tried Zwift, but much prefer SYSTM.

You absolutely NEED some kind of structure (imo), otherwise its just sitting on a bike feeling gradual more uncomfortable for xx mins. I wouldn't bother with Zwift without a smart trainer, but you can get free trials for the likes of Trainerroad, Xert, SYSTM, etc that would at least give you something to think about, even if you only stick to short workouts. Then you just need some kind of mindless fodder to watch in the background

Long sessions on a turbo are crap anyway. Just do some HIIT. It's be painful and still dull, but at least you're done in 30 mins.

Either that or buy some rollers. they're at least less dull than a turbo (but not by much it has to be said)

Long rides on turbo are dull, but was a lifesaver following COVID and feeling like heart was all over shop, meant i could sit and turn legs over at Zone 2, but knew i could climb off if i felt unwell and was at home.

I'm in the opposite position to the op. Busted my little toe dancing round the kitchen drunk at Christmas. So although I want to go running, I'm going to have to get the beastly bike out.

I really like Bitgym. Video tours in places I'll never go. MTB trails as well as road. Some of it is structured training and some just video. I'm currently gobsmacked by how it can tell you your rpm using the forward facing camera
