my 4 year old laptop is quickly grinding to a halt. every thing is becoming sticky and hanging as soon as i ask it to do the simplest of things. as i type this there is a serious lag before the words appear on the screen!

now being a man of a certain age these new fangled difference engines are beyond my Luddite capabilities. ive tried all the usual disk clean up, virus check etc, but still no better. when i check CPU usage its c 75% all the time when just surfing the web. clearly something is wrong and i need to take it to someone who knows what they are doing.

however as there are so many passwords, personal & financial data and records of *cough* left handed websites *cough* i'm slightly concerned about handing it over to just anyone.

does anyone know anyone good and reliable that is trustworthy (ie not going to clone everything and set up multiple profligate online me's) that i could take it to in Sheffield?

how do you ensure that the person that you are handing the single repository for the majority of your life isn't some ruffian?

My first thought would be to buy additional storage (if you don't have any) and save your personal files to that
Use the installation disc / factory reset to clear the laptop of everything and reinstall Windows (or whatever)
Do four years of updates and see how it performs
Then copy your files back. Keep the additional storage with copies elsewhere and safe. Regularly take it home to update it and then put it back

Not Sheffield but not far. Try PC part x just off the m18 in Bramley, Rotherham. I've known Paul years and he's a good bloke. Knew him before he had the shop too. And I know where he lives....
