One of many perceived cat traits

Exactly my point.

Meanwhile, when you're talking about a known misogynist, who once wrote to a female journalist to tell her she had the face of a dog, who attacked another by saying she was menstruating, dismissed the chair of the debates as a bimbo, and attacked a presidential rival by saying she'd been screwed by her male colleague, and that she couldn't satisfy her husband, and that Bill Clinton would have been a hero if he'd screwed a prettier woman instead of Monica Lewinsky...

Yeah, he's definitely thinking about cats.

Don't want to get into the argument, cos i've no bloody idea what trump is on about most of the time.

But, cats do tend to run away if you make sudden movements, I would say that's where the term scaredy cat comes from, and maybe one form of pussy.

Absolutely nothing, in reality.

I wonder what Trump would think if I called him a fanny.

I may just stick to calling him a complete arse.

In reality, this is a topic that can run and run, because it's not actually about the meaning of the word, it's about the individuals perception of it. And that's kind of, err, individual. So, you're all right. And wrong.

Since Are You Being Served, pussy has meant vagina.. We have accepted the american meaning..

As a derogatory term it is an americanism and it means someone who is weak and fearful in much the same way as

Big Jessie
Big girls blouse
Chicken and
Fanny

Occasionally we may call someone a

Big Pussycat

Meaning that they are kind and gentle

The origins have nothing to do with scaredy cat, otherwise we would be calling people kitties

'cept for the septics also say 'fraidy cat don't they..

hmmmm
bugger 😐

I think it goes back a lot further than that (17th/18th c). Are you being served just played on the innuendo. Doesn't it have the same double meaning in French as well (la chatte)? Not sure that was anything to do with Miss Slocombe.

Bit late to this party, apologies if this breaks the flow.

A feminist once told me there was only one slang word for lady parts but many for gentleman parts. That was a funny 45 minutes...

We used to play a very stupid drinking game around bidding for soang names fir stuff, bit like Trumps (bad pun intended), I'lll name you 20 works fo pr masturbation, I'll name you 21 words for vagina etc ...

If a feminsit writer is trying to create a scandel writing about Trumps use of the term pussey she is jist falling into his trap of creating yet more free publicity for him. He must be the most successful Presidential nomine candidate ever given his very low spending.

Trump used the term pussy exactly as its meant to be used in common slang, as someone who is weak - like a girl.

Aah well there you go..

I rest my case

I'm fairly certain Miss Slocombe helped to popularise it again though, no lady under the age of about 140 years old would be able to encourage anyone to stroke their pussy without a cheeky grin these days

I wouldn't disagree with that, to the extent that the word pussy on it's own would be enough to make people chuckle, even without inviting anyone to stoke it. Not sure if it has the same camp comedy value in France.

So we are in agreement then..

The poisonous human slug was using sexist language.. Not just sexist, but the sort of insult favoured by teenaged bullies and neanderthal thugs

Jesus wept.

OED:

a. Chiefly colloq. A girl or woman exhibiting characteristics associated with a cat, esp. sweetness or amiability. Freq. used as a pet name or as a term of endearment. Cf. puss n.1 3, pussycat n. 3.

c1557–65 in T. Wright Songs & Ballads (1860) lxxiv. 209 Adew, my pretty pussy, Yow pynche me very nere.
1583 P. Stubbes Anat. Abuses sig. Hv, You shall haue euery sawcy boy..to catch vp a woman & marie her... So he haue his pretie pussie to huggle withall, it forceth not.

1852 H. B. Stowe Uncle Tom's Cabin I. xvi. 266 ‘What do you think, pussy?’ said her father to Eva.
1932 A. Christie Thirteen Probl. xi. 193 ‘The dame de compagnie, you described, I think, as a pussy, Mrs. Bantry?’ ‘I didn't mean a cat, you know,’ said Mrs. Bantry. ‘It's quite different. Just a big soft white purry person. Always very sweet.’
1941 A. Christie N or M? iii. 38 Old boarding-house pussies. Nothing to do but gossip and knit.
1952 M. Tripp Faith is Windsock iv. 73 ‘Your rear gunner is a hit with the ladies.’ ‘Jake knows how to make the pussies purr; it's an old Jamaican custom.’

1986 D. Potter Singing Detective ii. 45 But tonight there isn't a pussy in sight. Not even a four-legged one. All good people have gone home.

b. slang (chiefly N. Amer.). A sweet or effeminate male; (in later use chiefly) a weakling, a coward, a sissy. Also: a male homosexual.
In quot. 1904: a man likened to a house-cat; a dependent or ‘domesticated’ man.

1904 ‘M. Corelli’ God's Good Man xxi, I shall invite Roxmouth and his tame pussy, Mr. Marius Longford.
1925 S. Lewis Martin Arrowsmith vi. 65 You ought to hear some of the docs that are the sweetest old pussies with their patients—the way they bawl out the nurses.
1934 M. H. Weseen Dict. Amer. Slang 193 Pussy, an effeminate boy.
1958 L. Durrell Mountolive viii. 157 ‘I first met Henry James in a brothel in Algiers. He had a naked houri on each knee.’ ‘Henry James was a pussy, I think.’
1967 ‘iceberg slim’ Pimp v. 103 Look Preston, I got lots of heart. I'm not a pussy. I been to the joint twice. I did tough bits, but I didn't fall apart.
1972 T. O'brien Combat Zone 45 You afraid to be in the war, a goddamn pussy?
1988 J. D. Pistone & R. Woodley Donnie Brasco 119 If he beat me up or cut me, then I would be a pussy in everybody's eyes.
1993 G. Donaldson Ville 20 He believes the only thing worse than being a pussy is being a big pussy.
2004 J. Meno Hairstyles of Damned 125, I..wanted to ask her to Homecoming, but I was a pussy and embarrassed about being in love with her because she was fat.

Bolded the pertinent bit. The cat being referred to is a house cat.

Mind you, if you've ever seen how a cat reacts when you do something it's scared of doing like taking it outside...

So yeah, it is sexist, but not how you lot seem to imagine it.

FFS read a book, life's too short for this pish.
