You don't need to be an 'investor' to invest in Singletrack: 6 days left: 95% of target - Find out more
There's another thread showing some incredible dart throwing, and saying it is a truly great moment in sport. Much as I enjoyed it I don't think I'd ever have darts as a 'greatest moment' - if you could chat on your phone while you're performing it takes something away for me.
Anyway, it got me thinking about 'truly great sporting moments'. These are the first I thought of - they all had me out of seat even though I watched some of them years after they took place.
I have my own rules as to what counts as a 'moment', but go ahead and justify your picks.
The punch at about 2:25 is the most perfect I have ever seen:
This round:
I still think Hinault cannot win each time I watch:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bzJDNtgBsGE
Dennis Bergkamp! Dennis Bergkamp! Dennis Bergkamp! Dennis Bergkamp! Aaaaaaiiiiiiihhhhhhhh!
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XsZkCFoqSBs
I'd also add this, but I realise some of you might not think it should be included 🙂
Hearns knockout was astounding. Don't think I saw it live (or live on telly) though and to really be involved in a "moment" you have to see it as it happens I think (no, I don't work for Sky! 😆 )
This one (1.m in)
and Jonny Wilkinson's in 2002, I did see live and can still remember my reaction. Joy! 😀
Peaty’s world champs win. Not because it was particularly special technically, compared to any other (esp Danny Harts run), just after all the times he missed out it felt good.
I was on the Champs-Élysées in 2012. The yellow jersey as leadout man - unforgettable.
Johnny Wilkinson's drop goal at the end of the 2003 Rugby World Cup final against Australia.
I lost my composure for a good 10 minutes after that - just WoW!
Oh yeah, I meant 2003 😀
Gwin's chainless win in Leogang in 2015 was really something:
And obviously this is tainted, but what a moment it felt like at the time - "the look":
I still think Danny Harts run at Champery or Aaron Gwin winning after snapping his chain out of the start gate were pretty special.
And he didn't even win...
Last lap of 2008 Brazilian GP...
Man Utd's comeback in the champions league final. Still remember it like it was yesterday. Had never seen anything like it before or since.
Last lap of 2008 Brazilian GP…
I'd go for 2009, closely followed by the 2011 Canadian GP.
I'd post videos but clearly FOM don't like embedding their videos on other sites
This, especially from 1:20 in. Incredible performance under insane pressure. Still has me welling up watching it now
Most recent and one of the best for me! I will admit, after several recent shit years, I cried a bit when that drop goal went over and I knew we'd won!
(mainly because I liked seeing Carl Lewis lose)
I should probably add this one as well 🙂
The most amazing bit of sport I have ever seen is the whole match of the 38 / 38 draw in the calcutta cup ( well the first half was pish if you ar a scotland fan 🙂 )
The 2003 drop goal is better than the drop goal itself. It was clear what the aim was, but the decision making under extreme duress was incredible. It's the point at which JW is dropping in to the pocket and Dawson sees half a gap and in a moment goes for it. He's snagged and they have to win and recycle again. But now the scrum half, the guy you want to deliver the pass to JW is on the ground, so Johnson (I think) immediately realises they need another go around. The pressure of handling, not getting bound up, and so on, before MD can then recycle and set up the drop goal is superb. Simple day to day stuff, you'd say - but under that pressure.
My own addition -
Allan Donald vs Mike Atherton, Trent Bridge 1998
Fuller videos are available (the actual battle was edge of your seat but unfolded over about 20 minutes)
I am sure I will get flamed for this but thats not going to stop me. On a serious Gwin chainless win is breathtakingly brilliant
The whole of Super saturday at London 2012 - especially the Mo Farah kick and then the moment when he realises he's going to win. You could have turned all the lights off and his smile would have lit the stadium up.
Another cricket moment - Chef's hundred in his last test match at the Oval. Not linking a video, because I nicked off work and was there so it's remaining in the memory, not on a grainy youtube.
and barely old enough to remember it, but 'that looks like Stephen Roche' for the commentary alone
And Derek Redmond's dad too...... the way he waves away the officials

christ, I'm welling up!
I was at the end of Hangar Straight for that one.
I will go with another Hearns fight, the Hagler vs Hearns war.
And of course the last minute Aguero goal to take the premier league.
and just this year in UFC there was Edwards last round turnaround against the dominant champ champ Usman.

David Platt vs Belgium, 1990
Cav in Paris a few years back. Good telly moment. Into the pic from the right and out to the left. Also 2012 with the yellow jersey leading out the rainbow.
Raducanu winning the US open. Ok she’s not done a lot since but that was history making on live TV. And I’m not a tennis fan. A qualifier won a major tournament. Think about that.
This is way I used to watch MotoGP
Not a boxing fan these days but the atmosphere in the pub where I watched this fantastic
Tom Pidcocks win at the TDF is up there for me too

Shane Warne, Mike Gatting
Andy Murray - Wimbledon.
And the Rumble in the Jungle as mentioned above. Foreman had been crushing other top heavyweights effortlessly and Ali was past his best. Nobody gave him a chance.
We were in the Olympic/Paralympic stadium in London 2012 when Richard Whitehead won his gold medal.
The atmosphere was electric, his running technique required him to come from a long way back, it was proper hairs on the back of your neck time.
MrsMC is as hard as nails and she was in tears - the whole disability sport thing wasn't around when she was younger, it means a lot to her now.
I was also at Old Trafford when Beckham scored "that" free kick against Greece to qualify us for the World (?) Cup. Amazing atmosphere. But he'd missed half a dozen before then.
Tommy Hill vs John Hopkins, Brands Hatch 2011
To be that close after 19 laps and then to be racing like that on worn out tyres... Epic stuff. Final lap starts ~2:55 in. Proper Rob Warner/Danny Hart commentary vibes too.
Man Utd’s comeback in the champions league final. Still remember it like it was yesterday. Had never seen anything like it before or since.
Aye @BoardinBob I remember it like it was yesterday too. It was quite a night. Watched it in the White Lion in town. The pub was so rammed they locked the doors 3 hours before kick off. At ninety minutes we thought it was all over, then when the second goal went in the whole place went absolutely nuts. I nearly fell off the table I was stood on 😂
Manchester City Centre was completely insane that night. We stayed out partying all night and all chucked a sicky the next day, along with 50% of Manchester 😃
1979 French GP Villeneuve v Arnoux.
Also agree re. Pidders incredible descent in the TdF - not to mention winning atop The Alpe.
Jake Wightman winning the 2022 World 1500m championship.
Five years after retiring, and having spent a year in jail during that time, Piggott came out of retirement on a Monday at Leicester and, 12 days later, won the richest mile race in the world The breeders Cup Mile at the age of 55.
Royal Academy didnt really get the full mile being more of a sprinter and so Piggott sat him in last place and times his run superbly and then pretty much picks the horse up and throws him over the line at the end.
ICC Cricket World Cup Final 2019 Eng vs NZ - the one with the Super Over
The Ashes in 2019 - the one with Jack Leach's glasses and that commentary from Aggers
Hope this works, Demetrius Johnson vs. Ray Borg. Arguably the greatest mma lightweight if not pound for pound fighter of all time in the sport.
Pulls off a belly to back suplex to armbar submission like it was a walk in the park 😂
From the 1972 olympics men’s Greco Roman wrestling, Chris Taylor (USA) pulled off a belly to belly suplex against Wilfred Dietrich (West Germany). Wilfred at the time was the most decorated Olympian ever in wresting.
Chris weighed in at 287lb whilst his opponent weighed 444lb, the sheer commitment needed to pull off the move is staggering!🫣

Britains most successful road cyclist
this is definitely on my list for sure
This is amazing…I’m not a bowling fan but it’s extraordinary.
@racefaceec90 - I’m not really a snooker fan, but Ronnie was on fire there! Super impressive with his speed, I only saw him hesitate and readjust once 😂
Football - Aguerroooooooo!
And Liverpool’s 4-0 win v Barca was sensational, especially considering the context. 3-0 down after the first leg to a Messi masterclass, and Salah and Firmino missing for the second leg. And the winning goal after Trent’s corner.
Ali's rope-a-dope to defeat the seemingly unstoppable George Foreman.
I'm still bitter about the Utd comeback against Bayern.
I was skippering the cricket club 1XI at the time, we were going well in the league, and I got a call on the Friday before a key game on Saturday. My strike bowler was pulling out. He had two blistered and infected knees and couldn't bend them let alone run in and bowl fast.
The reason - as the second goal went in he'd done the full knee slide across the carpet of the Bull and Chequers, in shorts. Tw*t
4x400 1991.
I grew up on this moment.
Remember: it was the midst of the Cold War, and the Canada-USSR series was like seeing it all unfold on ice.
The goal itself isn't that dramatic by hockey standards, but the fact that it was a goal at all was like a triumph for the 'good guys'.
Senna, at Donington in 1993. Amazing drive in the wet beating the technically superior Williams cars. That first lap was amazing.
Jonah Lomu V Mike Catt 1995
As a skier I remember this being a pretty exciting finish:
