I can't be bothered reading all these posts...all I know is everyones getting excited talking about soldering this and that and I feel like I'm missing out.
Can someone cut out the gobbly de gook....it appears they are being made by an amateur in his bedroom.
What are these lights?
Are they revolutionary?
How much?
How do I get one?
Are they strong enough to grow cannabis in my loft?
Are they strong enough to grow cannabis in my loft?
Well, having seen the 'beam shots' I reckon your cannabis would be like burnt toast very soon...... 😉
i only want mine to ride on the road and blind car drivers........ 😈
i have the 1st of the old ones 1200lumens i think, its really good and easily out performs my riding buddies lights, its with trout atm getting the led upgrade so **** knows how bright the thing'll be when it comes back.
my ayups will be spares!!
the guy is a pleasure to deal with too, very helpful and passionate about what he does.
would recommend
From what i've gathered:
LED lights made by a guy on the forum
No
Never seen a price but assume you'll be paying more than DX*
I think you have to email Trout
No
*And probably getting higher build quality.
Kit is £145+70 for one of smudge's batteries with a charger. A built up light is £175. You get a tiny little cnc'd light that sits directly over the stem, has six of the very latest spec Cree XP-G led's and puts out around 2000 lumens. As far as I know, the first fifty lights Troutie has made have all been sold, but there is almost certainly going to be more made. The beauty of Trout's set up is that he's constantly playing around with ideas and suggestions from those using his lights, and has a very enthusiastic cnc guy who puts his own suggestions in to make the light even better. Trout started making a pretty crude design that worked very well, that has transformed into a very stylish, neat little light. I received my light this morning, and I couldn't believe how tiny it is when you actually hold it. I opted for the kit, so that when led's improve, as they are soon to do, I'll know how to take the light apart and install new emitters. The forthcoming S1 Cree's will be 400 lumen each instead of the current 340.
He also has a smaller 3 led light that has slots to allow for use as a helmet light, called the Baby Trout. I suggested putting a red led on the back, and found Trout had already made a prototype for someone with a pair of red LEDs, but reckons he can independently switch them. That's the sort of feedback that has made the light so popular.
Can you adjust the power rating for when you are riding
on the road?
But also I hear people buying into the DX lighting as its £ 50 quid
Nver seen the DX myself.
The DX and Trout light are different animals, I have both.
The DX is a minter for the money and works well.
But my trout light is just in another league, loads more light and depth as well.
As for dimming the light yes you can on the trout and DX light, I would guess by about 60%
Thanx for that info Montylikesbeer
Without appear to be rude but what makes the Trout worth the money.
Can you do a picture test and put both up on here?
Can you do a picture test and put both up on here?
The information has already been posted on the other forum in great detail. I think you need to look there.
oh, not mine just found them on the other thread.
or do a search for his website...
I've got a DX as well, and it's a fantastic light for the money, and makes a perfect commute light, and produces quite enough light for most people's needs, but it is about one third as bright as a Troutelight, and as I pointed out, Troutelights are easily upgradeable, and Trout isn't in China.
Another point I've just thought of is that Trout's light on low power is producing around 1100 lumens, compared to the DX's 700 on full, and you'll get around fifteen hours out of the battery on that setting. The DX on low is for commuting only, there's not enough light for serious off-road. Search for 'Bastid', and you'll find lots of info about the DX, and have a quick read through the current long thread about the Trout light. You don't need to read it all, but the photos that are on there will give you a lot of info, about the developement of the light, and comparison beam-shots. Chris, (Trout), doesn't make his lights as a business, he's a flooring specialist, the lights are a sideline as a long-time homebuild light enthusiast.
The dx is 900 lumens isn't it?
I run mine on low all the time and find it ok. Not saying its anywhere near comparable to the troutlight of course, but saying its for commuting only on low mode seems a bit unfair. Maybe i just got a good'un tho.
Thanx for that Nick and info guys pretty impressive
DX, 900 lumens, in their dreams, like the others claiming that they are much closer to 700. I have 2x MCE torches and a trout light, last years version, and it's brighter than the two MCE on full power....
What makes it worth the money is the fact that any 'brand' would be charging you 400 sheets for less performance but a more spangly battery pack.
wow @ the troutlight! (twin P7 MCE torch user)
Just about to head out and run the Trout light for it's first proper ride.
I'll take my camera as well and see what I can do.

I have one of these and it is brighter than the current THIS YEARS Hope LED 4 and smaller so hardly Crude. 2000 lumens must require shades surely.
Have yoiu tried putting Troutie lights into Google?
I am too lazy to use Google so i staretd a thread on STW instead
i am too lazy to click on the top link from a google search so here it is instead
Ok I'm interested.
How much for 'bangers and mash' or would would you consider a swop for some growing lamps?
Junkyard, I was referring to the very first prototype 6led light, which was the very square one, which is fairly crude looking by the standards of the latest design. That's what I've really enjoyed about the whole Troutelight saga, seeing how it has become more and more refined as time's gone on, fins being thinned down, corners more rounded, it's such a compact design, Chris has done an astonishing job, along with the cnc guy, I really wish I had the skills to do something like it.
i was joking anyway missed the wink - my links were also very tongue in cheek as well OP
The new ones are over engineered IMHO - Joking again but he knows I think that is too many Lumens
Dark should be well dark at least at the edges and not require the use of sunglasses for night riding 😉
