Putting winter tires on the runaround last night and after two wheels the Jack stopped being able to lift the car. The arm raises but as soon as it starts to take the weight of the car it sinks back down.

Jack meant to do 2 tonnes and it’s a small car so don’t think it’s over loaded. I’ve used it a handful of times before for the job and it’s been fine.

Reminded me of the importance of supporting a jacked car even if only to put the wheel not being changed under it.

Any thoughts on what might be the problem. The release screw seems to tighten but maybe not a good seal?

Ever changed or topped up the oil ?

Even more so if it's one of them you put in a case and store on its side somewhere.

I had a 5t bottle jack that was soft like this (frommnew ) till I bled the air out and added some oil. Solid as a rock since

Nope. I wondered about that but not sure how to do that.

There’s an orange cap which I wondered of might be oil but says do not adjust so then I thought maybe not, as oil isn’t something you ’adjust’ as such, although topping up is adjusting I suppose.. How do I bleed a Jack?

It’s stored on its wheels but I use it About twice a year I think I’ve had it 2 or 3 years.

Mine did that this year, needed an oil top up. There are two caps, but 0ne is just a bung - this is the hydraulic fluid top up. The 'do not adjust' is the one you don't touch.

Seals may have dried out or the non return valve may be stuck open a little.

Try jacking it up as far as it goes and see if the ram leaks. Leave it up and put something heavy on it. If it doesn’t go all the way up it’s more than likely needing oil.

Can I use fox fluid or rockshox or 3 in 1 in it? I don’t have hydraulic oil otherwise.

Just google - I think I popped in some ATF fluid in mine as my X-Fusion dropper seat post runs on it so had it in, and I'm never going to use 1l of the fluid...

It needs lightweight oil... Rockshox/Fox oil is a bit expensive for what it is...

Jack oil. Halfords/Screwfix/Toolstation/hardware shops sell it.
