Can someone explain the thought processes of someone who does things like this?
It was in today's Western Daily Press, but they haven't got an online report.

Stupid thing to do, the railings are high on that bridge & it gets a lot of use by cyclists.
That pic in the Telegraph is the wrong bridge, its This one

Kids I imagine. The thought process being it was funny when they saw it in a cartoon / film, but are too young to understand / think through the real world consequences.

There was lad killed when this happened in Liverpool, they think he was only doing 19mph, easily achieved on a mountain bike. It was a company who wanted to keep people from their land that did it. £50k fine.

They can shout about how serious it is but the police and judicial system won't do a great deal even if it results in a death.

Yes, that bridge in the Telegraph is very open & overlooked by a large pub beer garden & main road just out of shot to the right but the bridge with the boobytrap has trees either end & not overlooked by any buildings.

It happened on the Bath - Bristol cycle route a few years ago. An ex-squadie, just back from Afghanistan was the victim than came off his bike and spent 30mins lying unconscious on the path. If memory serves, he said to the papers that he was going to dedicate his life to finding who did it...

Didn't hear any more about it, but I like to think that either justice has been served, or the perpetrators are still waiting in fear!

Not that I'm condoning violence in any way, I'm assuming he was just going to point out how immature they had been, how dangerous it was, and how they should think twice before doing it again.

and they had 50,000 pounds costs as well, so 100k for blocking a route, and it wasnt liverpool, but near southport a totally different unitary authority and town.

Project apologies for the error the location being irrelevant.

The point being its very sad that even though the authorities find the culprit there is little done as a punishment.

It does look like this is far from an isolated incident and it is only by chance that some of these are discovered and removed and those that aren't cause far less damage than the potential loss of someone's loved one out enjoying a run or ride.

There was also a lad on a motorbike, who hit a sheffield loop restrictor on a sustrans path locally, he ruptured his spleen, all seen by a passing cyclist who offered help, the chap rode off and sadly died of injuries.

There have also been quite a few cases of motorcyclists hiting gates or loops on other sustrans paths, despite signs saying theyre not allowed to ride them.
