[Closed] Tricky PC problem. Power options - auto sleep. Cougar out there?

Perhaps windows thinks it's sharing media? Got any other devices on the network tha tmight be set to talk to it?

at least one, sometimes three.
But I want it to kick them off if It wnats to go to sleep.

Check that "wake on LAN" is not active

oh c***, you could be right. I think I might have set it to wake on LAN when I was playing with making it a remote media server! Smart thinking. Now, lets see if I can remmeber how to turn it off! Where Do I look?

its not so much it wakes on LAN though, that it never sleeps

There's a setting to force it not to sleep when it's sharing media.. try that.

Ive narrowed the problem down to srvnet and a MOBO audio driver.

its a BT Home hub. It wont even accept a ping, let alone something as demanding as that scaredy.

Audio driver - disable Line Out.

Srvnet - check settings in Power / Edit / Advanced / Multimedia / Sharing.

All that's left is Media centre recording something. So seems all Clear.

Problem now of course is that having disabled Line Out I have no sound on the external speakers in the office 🙁

Do you not just turn your computer off? It takes about a second and with windows you should be shutting it down on a very regular basis.

I was under the impression that it was better to leave W7 PCs on for extended periods, utilising sleep, hybrid sleep and hibernate as necessary and preferable over shut down.

My W7 laptop gets shut down every night and then only gets started up again when it's needed. Boots quicker than I can make a cup of tea and sit down again.

Define "better."

TBH, I've had so many [i]really bloody irritating[/i] niggly problems over the years with snooze / sleep / hibernate / standby / whatever else they come up with, that I've just globally sacked it off. All the computers in the house have two states, on and off; if I ever start to think that I need more than that, I have a quiet world with myself.

Sleep on w7 is great though. Instant on, and you don't lose all the stuff you have open. Plus if the power goes off it'll still recover thanks to the hybrid sleep. Not once in two years has it failed to wake either. Reckon the uptime on my w7 workstation is longer than on my servers at work.

Im sure id read somewhere that it would allow for automatic updates, MSE updates etc a chance to install and scan when the scheduler fires them up, not just when you need the computer to be committing all its resources to your work.

Fairenouff then, Ill use shutdown more often.

Yep, it'll wake up to defrag, backup, update, record with Media Centre etc, then sleep again afterwards.

Personally I wouldn't switch automatic updates on for any reason. Sure... when you do want the updates it sometimes takes a while... time to cook dinner or clean the bike. 🙂

Apart from update downloads, I don't think windows has any maintenance tools worth running that take any time. I have had hard drives that take hours to run CHKDSK, but they were pretty screwed up by that time to require it. I honestly see no advantage in leaving the PC powered on if you don't actually need it to be doing something.

I'm sure you're both right and I'm wrong here. I'm guilty of judging W7 by its predecessors; I just got royally sick of resuming W9x / XP and then either being presented with a black screen or having to reboot the goddamn thing anyway due to the NIC not working or some other ephemeral weirdness. I just don't trust it. But, that's a failing of me rather than the tech.

Fine for XP, W7 is Win-RightArrow-Enter. Though, I've got the power button mapped to Shut Down, so I just blip that.

I have rarely sat at a Windows 7 PC I will admit. Can you not still switch on 'classic' menus etc?

If so... one more reason not to use it! 🙂 I am half onto Linux now and tossing up between using it completely or getting Windows 7. Not too worried now, but I know I can't rely on XP forever.

Just one audio application and one game I can't shake the addiction for mean I still need the Windows.

I think this depends on the motherboard of your PC. Some support it and some don't. There may be an application on your PC that ships with that retail version of your OS to configure it, or it could be in CMOS.

I know that's not a lot of help. You might search your control panel or your program menus for anything referring to power button settings.
