I'm on the scout for a decent treadmill. Having had a look they seem to go from £200 to stupid money without too much in the way of obvious differences. Anyone got any tips?

Don't buy new! Most people use a new treadmill a few times, then it collects dust. Buy a used one from Craigslist or similar!

Yup. They're the new exercise bikes. Also, Gumtree, Freecycle and eBay. Much cheaper though, to buy a decent pair of trainers and enjoy everything the British weather can throw at you.

You know there's plenty of outside to run in and it won't cost you a penny.

Keen outdoor runner here but (rather to my surprise) the treadmill gets a reasonable amount of use, roughly once a week more often when I want a gentle run and have some telly to watch rather than when it's wet!

2nd hand decent quality is the way to go. I paid £180.

It will if you hire a babysitter for your young children whie you go out to run.

As others say, get a good one SH. We got a £1K treadmill for £200 a few years back. It feels bombproof. Parts can apparently be obtained for it too, something that's unlikely with a cheapy.

have a look around to see what's about. buy a 'gym/commercial' quality machine, as they will be better than a home model. stay away from argos type things. look out for something with a good level of incline, and a good speed level, 10mph/16kph or higher. anything lower, and it'll be too slow for sprints.

I'm sure that never occurred to the OP.

Anyway, as above. Go secondhand and ex commercial if you can. Depending on cost, and your reasons for wanting a treadmill, a years gym membership and access to al their equipment might be a viable alternative.

You've hit the nail on the head! Childcare's the issue... and it's not for me - I just get up early and go out before anyone's up.

Thanks for your help everyone. The key question is about differentiating features. Are the only variables max speed, incline and belt width? Very hard to choose and no decent review sites out there...
