Cant see beyond getting an economically viable motorway cruiser/bike carrier Octavia a-like as cheap as possible with my car allowance for 24 months. Needs to be car suitable for a Shiny, according to the rules.

Not which car, but more which finance?

Sorry, your problem is NP-complete.

Hopefully someone can offer you a reasonable heuristic.

Standard £8k car allowance? Less than 3 years old, less than 20k miles? Do you get a mileage allowance or fuel card?

PCP on a Golf R estate if you get mileage paid. Although you may batter the mileage limit (and in turn, get battered if its more than 12k) so if thats the case then HP that mutha hubbard...

£6k car allowance? Less than 5 years old, less than 20k miles

This and 20ppm

Not a bad shout the golf, perhaps not the R though... I need to be able to get out of Gorrick forest car parks...

I'd go for a 3 year old Golf R estate then. There will be a lot coming off the billion 3-year lease deals they did when new, so they should be good money and you'll be able to pick and choose the spec you want. Estates are obviously less common, but there are still some about. Could go HP then mileage is fairly irrelevant - PCP then obviously they'll care more because you have the balloon payment at the end which is based in part on mileage.

EDIT: the R is 4wd so you'll be able to Ken Block it out the car park...

Ford doing interest free credit at the moment if that's of any interest (pardon the pun). I'm about to buy a new focus 1.5l 182 titanium x for about £18k

Well I did some investigating of some premium cars that I won't be getting for comparison:

2014 BMW 3 series touring 2.0D 32k Miles PCP dealer exchange with my 120d - total price over 3 years £13,300 without ballon
Brand new Audi A4 2.0D lease - total price over 3 years £13,200
Brand new Octavia VRS DSG 2.0D lease - total price over 3 years £11,149
Brand new Octavia Scout DSG 2.0D Simpson Skoda - total price over 3 years £10,814
Brand new Golf 1.6D lease - total price over 3 years £11,288

Looks like the Octavia Scout - bearing in mind my hobby - would be good value on a Simpsons lease 🙂

When I was in this position I bought an ex-demo Honda and ran it for the best part of a decade. But we didn't have any silly rules about how posh your car has to look...

I had the Scout as my last lease, it's a good car, not sure about the recent facelift. A little noisy on the motorway though.
Now have a Superb which is a nicer place to be in but a bit bland.

If you're travelling for work then buying a diesel may mean in a couple of years that you won't be able to drive into some towns. Obviously you'll have a different car by then...

same here, been running the same car for 12 years. It's getting tired now, hence the new one.

I have been in the same boat recently and this is what i did. Got a Sainsburys Credit card, because its interest free on purchased for a long time. This is onviously cheaper than borrowing the funds from the finance company who charge aout 8% for a pcp. So i used the CC as the deposit and ive set repayments to repay the card as the interest free period runs out. Then i got me a relatively economical car, BMW 320d Touring and borrowed the money from a PCP deal. Have a look at this for actual mpg figures https://www.honestjohn.co.uk/realmpg/
