It’s been on my wish list for years, really want to visit New York, but it’s expensive I know and my OH would prefer that of money to be spent on 2 weeks in the sun rather than a city break... 3 years ago I applied for an esta also I thought we would actually go but didnt..I’ve got a few questions for anyone been or going?

I know I need to apply for an esta again is it straight forward second time round?

Was thinking of flying Monday and return overnight Friday into Saturday? Is that enough time or would an extra night be better?

The big one who to book with?

Plan to fly from bham possibly stop over Dublin for a few hours then on to New York, is that th best route?

I was hoping for next June so pretty far in advance but I can save bit by bit and hopefully book after the new year. The trips and stuff I’m guessing I can book in advance.

Wife went last year, even though she was staying in Long Island with her Sis for most of it, she thought it was too long, not that there’s a lack of thing to do, far from, but she was pretty exhausted and needed some space.

We used a fly finder type website, ended up flying Virgin out and Delta back.

Oh and flights aren’t that expensive relatively, but it’s stupid expensive there. Basically anything touristy is going to cost fortunes.

Oh and the above was cheaper than Norwegian Air, by the time you add on the ‘extras’ think EasyJet

Long time ago so no specific tips, but we travelled cheap - Youth Hostel in the centre was pretty nice, catch the subway into the city rather than taxi etc.

Get a copy of the rough guide as that has good but cheap hotels, restaurants, attractions etc.

I find cities draining so if it were me i d take an apartment.  Yes more expensive but you can cook and relax, taking breaks.  Hotel rooms depress me, it's usually cheaper overall to take something with access to cooking.  Try air bnb for eg.  We walked everywhere, loved it.

Went in April, stayed in the Hilton on 8th Avenue, room had a microwave, fridge and kettle. Supermarket next door, diners across the street that were really cheap. Get a city pass before you go, job jobbed. Will be as expensive as you make it.

If you can fly midweek to midweek, you may avoid more of the business travel, which can lift the prices. Lots of folk fly out on a Monday and then home on a Friday for work.

It can also be cheaper to fly to a different US destination and connect to JFK or EWR from there. I've saved £1000s connecting via DFW to MIA rather than flying direct, for example. I'm not familiar with where is served by Brum though, I'm afraid, but flying with Virgin/Delta or BA/American gives you a lot of codeshare connecting options.

Thanks all, we have 2 weeks off end of August might go then midweek to midweek if that’s cheaper, might get an extra night that way.

Me and our Maude went last year for 4 (I think) days. Did the air B&B thing in Harlem which saved a small fortune on hotels, 10 mins on the sub and we were at Central Park . I found a few days to be more than enough, I soon got fed up of the constant honking, sirens etc. I think we got flights off holiday pirate the only downside was getting out of jfk It was totally unorganized with 2 airlines queing next to each other for separate desks, no signage and the amount of people getting sent to the back of the que or trying to blag extra or overweight bags was rediculous.

It'll be a bit warm in August!

We did AirBnB in Jersey, again had a whole apartment for £600 for 10 days.  15-20 mins to World trade in morning on Metro.

Flights much cheaper if your stay ext nds ofer Saturday night, the mon-fri trips are aimed and priced at work travellers

if you go to JFK you can get to manhattan easily on the LIRR (~$15 including the air train) or subway (even cheaper but slower) rather than a ~$100 cab.

Just had to renew my ESTA recently too. Nnothing different than doing it first time. I have to travel through JFK for work regularly, when you are on your ESTA second time round you can still use the ‘Returning ESTA’ queues andfinger print  machines.

Always wish that my stays in New York could be more than 3 hours in transit. 😢 had the chance a couple of times to spend a day in the city. Great place, lives up to the hype.
