We always take out annual travel insurance and we are covered right now for 'Whole of Europe' however we decided to book to see family in Australia so it obviously won't cover us.

Before I go into the endless rabbit hole that will be trying to speak to someone at the insurers (Debenhams), would it be better to extend the current policy or take out a new one? And is it 'allowed' to have two policies so would I need to cancel one?

Being double insured can lead to issues in the event of a claim. however in this case your current policy wont cover anything to do with Oz anyway, so no real issue unless something occurs on a European trip.

In terms of whether or not it's better to extend - just depends how much Debenhams want for the cover. Remember to check for different types of Worldwide policies, some places will sell one that excludes the USA and comes in a chunk cheaper as a result

I've done this in the past.  Insurer just charged the pro rata difference for the rest of the year,  They are usually happy to take some more cash off you.

Stand alone single trip policy for Aus would be easiest/simplest I would have thought. That's what I do when i go home to NZ (have a euro policy with bank).

Do you have a bank account that comes with free travel insurance? Always worth a check.

Often more expensive than just extending an annual policy

Just thought I'd get a head's up as I've never been in this situation. Going to stay with family near Brisbane (via a few days in Dubai on the way out and Hong Kong on the way back).

We have an annual policy with Debenhams and they are generally good with phone communication and modifying cover so give them a ring.
