I'm thanking you all in advance for any useful advice.

I'm off to Portugal on holiday this Easter. I have a rubbish arthritic hip that I'm obviously going to declare along with any other medical history required by the insurer. I have nothing to hide.

I have a consultant's appointment 17 days prior to the trip. I'm really hoping the surgeon is going to say 'let's get your hip fixed'. If the date of any potential surgery lies within the dates of the planned holiday I'm going to have to cancel something- holday or treatment. I'm happier to cancel the trip but it is all paid for upfront already.

I'm now looking for an insurance policy that will allow me to recoup as much of my holiday costs as possible should I be called in for treatment.

Easy-Jet flights, accommodation, airport parking have already been paid for, all by debit card.

Has anyone got any experience/ ideas about this they would like to share?

Cheers, Ambrose

Surely the answer is get the consultant to delay the op til you return from holiday?

Is that a thing? I'm very keen to have the op asap to be honest, chronic pain is not my friend.

Pre-existing condition with treatment likely. You’ll have to disclose that when you apply. No chance of getting cover IMO.

I think you’ll struggle taking a policy out now. There’s wording on every policy along the lines of “are you waiting on any medical procedures or results of investigations”.

If you’re over 50 maybe try Saga? Sorted my dad out with insurance through them when others said no.

As above, travel insurance isn’t going to help here. You’ve also taken out the policy too late. Travel insurance should be taken out as soon as possible after booking the trip so you get full cancellation cover. Doesn’t cost any more but might have helped here if the condition was declared and covered (arthritis is fairly easy to cover from memory) and then you later found out that you’d be going for surgery.

Just asking for the surgery to happen after the holiday is probably the best course of action now

People are suggesting delaying surgery to go on holiday. Wow, not sure my wife would have done that for her hip replacement the pain she was in. Indeed we didn't book any holidays for a period knowing there was a chance the opp would be scheduled.

If I was the doctor I would say if you delay you go to the back of the list. If you're in pain, take the hit on the money and get it fixed.

When my hip was bad you  wouldn't have got me near an aircraft seat for 2hrs !

Only you can decide which is worse. Your hip or the financial loss.

I am sure the surgeon would be perplexed if you ring up and say that your holiday is more important than your hip replacement.

An expectation of elective surgery within weeks of being seen is a bit unrealistic, unless this is private medicine.

Yeah that's what I was thinking. 17 days? 17 months may be more realistic.

This probably.

My BIL is having his hip replaced privately and even so the wait is more than 6 weeks.

I agree with all written above. I think I was/ am being over hopeful re: treatment. If I am lucky enough to get treated prior to the trip I see what if anything I can retrieve if I cancel.

Rather stupidly I hauled out a washing machine this afternoon. Silly me, leg really knows about it now!
