I'm off away for a couple of weeks - the first 5 days are a work trip (flights and accommodation paid for), and then I have a 9 day holiday in the destination. I'll then be flying home, again on 'work'.
During the work period I'll be covered by my work's travel insurance, and in theory my bank provides holiday travel insurance.
However, my bank insurance says 'trips should start and finish in the UK' - given that if something happens to me in days 1-5 I'll be claiming off work insurance, would it be argued that my personal trip technically not start in the UK and void my insurance?
Or, am I, as I suspect, over-thinking things, and should just claim off whatever insurance I'm under at the time?
Ah, well my insurance is covered as part of my bank account, so I don't book travel insurance anyway - it's just there (as far as i know haha)
I’ve had this and as my personal trip was bookended by work paid for travel, I had to get my work travel insurance to cover the whole trip. My personal bank travel insurance wouldn’t cover it.
Usually personal travel insurance covers "admin" type work overseas. So if you're the usual stw IT middle manager you'd probably be ok on your own policy. But ring them and ask them!
Or, if work got you there then it's fair to expect their policy to extend for your freebie. But again it's worth checking to see if it can.
(2nd option is the cheapest and arguably best option)
Thanks all. sadly (well, not sadly, I enjoy it!) work abroad isn't particularly administrative!
I've asked my work legal dept if our insurance will cover it, and if not, I've found an insurer who specialises in insurance for people in my situation - just called them and they'd cover it for about £60, which isn't too bad for peace of mind.

Which you will put straight on your expenses bill for the trip if work won't cover you through thier own insurance....right? ;-D
🤫 😅
hahah sshhhhhhhhh

I don't know what you mean by that. Your trip does start in the UK and you can prove it, irrespective of who covers you when. Get someone at work to call the broker for their BTI contract as those usually cover you EVEN for the segment when you're not working.
Or call the claims line at your Bank's insurers to ask them the question rather than waste £60.
I am very confident you're covered as it is either way.

Being technically correct doesn't help when you're in a forrin country with broken limbs being asked to pay a substantial bill.
So yes, checking before you go FTW
Anyone know how good the holiday insurance is that is wrapped up with the Nationwide fee paying account? Off on an extended (2 month) trip next year & monthly cost with AA as well makes sense if the insurance is any good.
well, having buried my head in the sand for 2 weeks over this (yay, anxiety), i just called Halifax's travel insurance line who confirmed I will be covered with my existing policy despite the work component of the trip 👌
That was a lot easier in process than my brain allowed it to be haha
