Transporting SUP on tow bar rack?

Tempted to buy an SUP for this years holiday rather than hiring but I'm aware of the space it'll take up inside the already full to bursting car.

Rather than go to the expense of a roof rack and roof box to free up space inside I'm thinking if I remove the unused wheel chocks on the tow bar rack it could be strapped down tight behind my bike.

Anyone any experiences of using a tow bar rack for something other than a bike?

I'd imagine the drag would be significant. How much does petrol/diesel cost at the moment?

Won't it be quite a bit wider than the car?

I assume the OP is talking about an inflatable, since he mentioned putting it in the interior of the car or in a roof box.

Buy an inflatable one?  Ours packs away into a carry case and goes in the boot.

Vision of previous posters thinking the op was talking about a rigid or inflated SUP strapped to a tow rack. I do wonder about people's ability to comprehend sometimes!!!!

Yes, not done it myself but know others that do this. I'd be making sure you have plenty of straps and give it a test drive before the day.

In the bag as long it's strapped in securely no issue.

I'd try and make some sort of box/bracket/frame to hold it as any straps are going to loosen as the SUP get's compressed, and any vibration would quickly wear a hole through the bag (and SUP).

But apart from that I can't see why not.

In the past I have used a camping table strapped securely to my thule tow bar bike rack to create a platform, and then strapped a load of stuff on top of it.

Worked okay, faff, ended up buying a roofbox and putting bulky stuff in the boot

i've got one of those waterproof bags that straps onto a towbag rack and it works really well for getting stuff to a place. a bit like one of these, but cost a whole load less 😀

I just strap it to the rails, leaving the wheel chocks at their most extended position. Works absolutely fine, I've had a bike (minus outside pedal) + the bag on there before too

no reason your suggestion wont work, just strap it down with a whole bunch and knot the rachets to ensure they don't slip open

I give it a go with a couple of ratchet straps. Can't see it going any where, that you're not going any way...

I don’t see why it wouldn’t work a sup board weighs less than a bike. Use ratchet straps have the ratchet under the rack and put a towel over where the straps might dig into the board.

I have a bak rak,

Same principle and it works well for carrying stuff. I have both some huge dry bags and a big alloy box depending on what I’m packing. No reason why bike rack will not work just watch the weight.
