We are off for a couple of weeks soon. The mattress in our poptop is a bit thin, we’d like to pop a layer on top.
Duvaley seems to be the go to answer, but they are very spendy.
Any real world advice here? Before I splash the cash.
We had a 2" thick one in our old van (not a T5) for many years and it was a huge improvement over the very uncomfortable rock and roll bed. So yes they are good and there is now a wider range of products with different thicknesses and comfort levels. If you're in West Yorkshire area you could pop into the factory.
One thing to bear in mind is that they are heavy and quite large when the bed is not in use as they don't really roll up that well. A T5 is not a big van but if you can hide it in the pop-up roof area, flat on the bed area, it might give you more room in the van as you drive.
In our new van we got some Jonic toppers which are quite soft but they complement the rock hard seat covers to give a decent night's sleep.
Would a couple of decent self inflating airbeds help ? I have a foldout bed system in my Stelantis van, but pop two Thermarest Mondo Kings on the bed base (wood). Spendy but comfy, and take up less space than a mattress
They're great, with a duvet it's basically a proper bed.
We have a memory foam mattress designed for the rib bed, it articulates so that it folds away onto the back section (like the parcel shelf) of the rib bed when that's set as the seat. Gets to live in the van all the time. Possibly a cheaper option if you've already got sleeping bags or bedding you use.
Can't remember the company it's came from but if you Google rib bed , you'll find similar..... If you've got a rib bed!
Dunelm Cool thick here. Does as it says - just as comfy as a Duvalay we tried, cooler, washable cover, only £50iirc.
Edit: this one which was on sale: https://www.dunelm.com/product/cooler-than-memory-foam-mattress-topper-1000182063
We also take our wool duvet - it's so much better at coping with different temperatures and humidity levels. Which has been an issue the last week as we have been in 20*c and humid overnight in northern Scotland!
We are on an ready comfy RIB bed though.
Vango California self inflating mattress. Coupled with a sheet and a proper duvet - brilliant for in the van.
@matt_outandabout I’m currently looking at mattress toppers for our transporter when it arrives, will also have a rib bed. I like the look of the dunelm one but what size do you have? They are only available in standard sizes and the bed is non standard I think. Thank you ☺️
Our RIB is nearly a double - it's larger than most Transporter beds. So ours is double bed sized topper. The few cm of extra width is just tucked down the side.
Same with a bottom sheet, of the elastic edged variety.
We just unhook and roll up together in a morning - or unroll in evening. It's a 20 seconds job.
Ok thanks. Need to check bed dimensions!
I've got a 5cm Vango pop top mattress up top that came with the van and bought a 5cm Duvalay with zipped cover sheet for the 3/4 RnR bed - £195
Be aware that the most a pop top can usually take in situ when closed will be 5cm.
I'm fine on the Vango with a pillow and sleeping bag - I let Mrs STR have the bed. She says it's comfy.
I did consider the thicker Duvalay but glad I didn't, as I just fold this over when I put the bed away and it sits nicely between the seats and tailgate
