I want to put a tow bar on my Transit Custom. Id like to do it myself and dont want to cut the bumper etc.

There seem to be some 'plug and play' dedicated wiring looms for the transit.

Has anyone self fitted this kit? Any recommendatiins or pitfalls?

My van has front and rear parking sensors. There is some vague reference to 'recoding' the electronics so that the electrics all work with the standard loom? Anyone know what this is about? It doesnt sound a very diy task...

Any advice gratefully received

Ian

I had mine done last year but I got a pro to do it. I believe the recoding changes the stability programming (which I assume is related to braking) and means that attaching a trailer switches off the parking sensors at the rear which is useful. I didn't want to mess with that myself. I also got a removable hitch as I read the non removable ones can interfere with the rear sensors when no trailer is attached too. The bumper did need to be cut but honestly I can't tell where.
My thinking was that firstly I don't have the kit to recode and the bumper cut would be done by someone who could make it tidy. It would take a day of my time to do it and I'd probably make pigs ear of it. The mobile fitter came to me and did it in work's car park while I was getting paid for my time.
I got the kit from PFJones and they organised everything. It wasn't the cheapest way to do it perhaps but at least it was done properly - your mileage may vary.

Go on the PFJones site and read the fitting instructions for every model of towbar
they offer _ this will give an idea of what is involved.
If you can get a genuine plug in wiring kit for a reasonable price use it as it can avoid
messing with your existing wiring.
Go 7 pin if you can as the 13 pin has extra power lead that needs running from alternator and is an extra bother with modern electrics.
Find out on motoring related forums if programming is needed , it is not always the case , some manufacturers have plug in wiring kits that make it obvious to the car systems when you plug something in , some gouge you for a reprogram..
research research.
