Hi people, I wanted to get some personalised sports gear made but apparently its quite pricey if you only do a couple, so any suggestion how to do that at home, with a normal desktop printer and a small budget? Any tips very welcome.

don't do the iron on printable transfer thing... unless you are happy for the design to only last for one wash
Decathlon do a printing service, I'd have thought it would be pretty cheap for a few off.
I just bought some inkjet transfer paper from photo paper direct who have a 50% sale on until Friday.
Works ok but not tried washing as they were for my daughters college project.
As yunki says, the iron-on transfer prints are horrid, your only proper option is screen printing, or dye-sublimation, which I think is how cycling gear is printed.
There is direct inkjet printing onto material, which can be done across an entire tee shirt, but it requires special printers and inks, and will fade and wash out over time.
Screen printing is most robust, I've got 30-odd year old tees with perfectly good four-colour print on.
Thanks for the replies! So I won't try that transfer thing... I guess it was too good (cheap) to be true. Googling led me to this new thing, [url= http://lumi.co/inkodye ]Lumi Inkodye[/url], has anyone given it a try yet? Apparently the ink that is applied developes in sunlight. So it would only be single colour prints. I think normal t-shirts would be ok so I don't think I need any specialised sports fabrics after all. So one option is just to get them printed somewhere. cp where did you see that Decathlon printing service? I only need a few but all with different graphics and texts.
