Anyone know anyone who’s had it? It was approved by NICE in 2015 but rollout to the nhs is very slow. There are a few private clinics offering it. It’s not cheap and not convenient unless you live near a clinic offering it but I’m intrigued.
I’ve got quite severe depression made worse by winter. I’ve had some benefit from talking therapy, mindfulness, a SAD lamp and exercise, but it’s nowhere near enough and I can’t take much more of feeling this way. I’ve tried virtually every available drug. It’s a bit daunting though, the prospect of spending a few thousand £ and having to travel to another city every day for 2 to 3 weeks while somehow holding down a full-time job.
🙁

Heard of it and seen a few documentaries but don't know anyone that has had the therapy I'm afraid.

Probably due to the slow NHS take up as you say.

I even looked into trepanning once, which I definitely DON'T advise.

I mention the above as I really do understand the desperation to feel different, "better".

Is it financially and logistically doable to take the required time off etc? Are your family supportive if you take the plunge, that will help massively I'm sure?

Have you read about the studies into the use of psilocybin ("magic") mushrooms for depression.

i`m not advising that you can easily get class A drugs and take them 😉 but my "friend" has tried it and the results are promising with the need for other medication reduced greatly.

My initial reaction was that it is quackery! 😡

But a little looking around an it seems to be pretty widely accepted here in the US. 😯

The Mayo Clinic and Johns Hopkins both do it. So does my local big hospital system UPMC,

Side effects seem minimal; I'd try it if I felt that it might help.

Hope that you will be doing better soon!

I’ve read about magic mushrooms and also ketamine being potentially useful for depression but neither are available on the nhs. I asked about ketamine, but my GP seemed a bit reluctant to spend the money to refer me, although I said I would be prepared to pay for the treatment it still costs the GP money to write a referral.
TMS might also be effective for migraine, which I also suffer from.

If you are looking to spend thousands on the treatment, and a large part of your symptoms seems to come SAD and the winter, could you not spend a couple of one week periods abroad? Somewhere like Mallorca, sunshine and exercise better than any drug?

Don't discount CBD oil until you've tried it.

In fact given the potential benefits and zero negative effects, what have you got to lose?

Was listening to something about this yesterday on the Joe Rogan podcast. He had Jeff Novitzky on. Jeff, if you're not aware, is one of the people who busted Lance Armstrong. He's now head of the Performance Institute for the UFC, which is their own in house training and recovery facility.

Joe asked Jeff if they had considered using transcranial direct current stimulation to treat concussions etc, then the discussion went from there. Joe mentioned this:

I'm away to do some research!

(Original JRE podcast here and it's super interesting for anyone interested in sports science, physical training and recovery etc https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-xxfT301Ii8)

Any more insights on CBD oil? Also came up on the JRE podcast and I'm very interested in hearing some real experiences

Yeah thanks darrell that’s really helpful. Perhaps keep your flippant suggestions to easier topics?

it wasnt meant to be flippant

I know some people who turned to self medicating because of lack of success in the traditional NHS route

I wouldn't really trust what you can get off a street dealer...

The mushrooms on the other hand are a plant therefore no unknown stuff added etc.

But it genuinely has made a big difference when used occasionally in accurately measured dosages.

I don't know how you would accurately measure the dose of mushies, but there's very little to go wrong if you do, as long as you get the right ones.

Sorry I misunderstood you. I was also tempted to self medicate out of desperation but I’ve read up on ketamine use for depression and it’s given at a very small dose. Higher doses can cause serious, irreversible damage to your bladder so I wouldn’t risk obtaining it illegally.

The Grand Canary museum has endless Cro Magnon skulls that have been trepanned. Odd since they had the sun but in that harsh terrain I guess they lacked the mushrooms. Do they have trepanning in Lapland as well as Fly Agaric?

Well get a decent sized batch prepared (dried) then weigh them out and you just start with a fairly low amount and adjust as necessary.

For the desired effect you dont need to go taking enough to make you think you can fly or whatever just enough to start to make things feel a bit weird and it "resets" something in your brain. Certainly does something positive anyway
