Booked a return for me and my 9yr old via trainline website but having looked at the actual tickets it seems that the seats are (albeit in the same carriage) not near each other.
Obvs this isn’t ideal for daughters first train trip and not sure I fancy her being sat with a stranger for 3 hrs (I couldn’t inflict that on a stranger!)
Does anyone know if trainline put seats together and the different numbers are likely because we asked for a table? Will we be waving at each other from opposite ends of a train? Or can we wing it?

Sit wherever you like. They can’t move you.

Lner? Go on the app and select new seats. Can just change your reservations. Doesn’t have to be booked via lner originally.

They can have you removed from the train if you are in someone elses seats and refuse to move

Got a source for that? Several conductors have told me there’s nothing they can do. Seat reservations aren’t guaranteed.

I'd sit with my 9 year old and anyone who complained would be told very politely to vacate our immediate vicinity.

Nah.

It depends on what kind of ticket you have.

I've changed my reserved seats with trainline.com in the past.

I believe only the police can do that, and unless things are actually turning into a physical altercation, neither the railway nor the police are going to do anything. Unless the train is actually packed, it doesn’t matter.
I read very recently about someone who had this problem, he’d booked a particular seat with a table for using his laptop while travelling, and found two blokes had taken his seat and the one next to it. They refused to move, and a member of the staff said there was nothing they could do. So the bloke said right, in that case I’ll go and sit in 1st.
He was told that he wasn’t allowed to do that, he asked what the staff could do. Basically nothing.

I agree count zero  " have you removed"  I didn't think it necessary to say by the police - I thought that obvious

Anyone who made a fuss to move a parent and child (unless they are in the same predicament) would rightly be told by a conductor/Police to get a grip. Loving the default upgrade @countzero

Surely just speak to the passengers sitting next to you or your daughter, explain the situation and politely ask if they help you out and swop seats? I know I would move for a valid reason.

Have moved on an Easyjet flight when asked, before they had reservations.

You know what they say about believing stuff on the internet.

Would that not escalate it to fare evasion? The seat reservations are free/part of standard class/not guaranteed. Whereas getting into 1st class without a ticket is actually not what you paid for. However good a "These men refused to give up their seats even though they were reserved, you wont believe what the passenger did next" clickbait article it makes.

I don't think I've ever been on a train where every seat is reserved. The various 'saver' tickets often allow you to use any eligible train on the day. Just sit in unreserved seating. You can use any carriage that isn't First Class.

I have, Harrogate-Kings Cross, arriving about 830. Colleague sourced the tickets, despite numerous reminders from me prior, that morning. We did not get seats. Never been more knackered arriving to a meeting before or since, hangovers included.

Cost ~£250 each too. Pillock.

You got tickets for a specific train journey where every other seat was reserved but yours weren't?

Quite normal on a standard non advanced fare at rush hour cougar.

The ECML arriving between 7&9.30 was often standing room only by the time it reached York pre covid.

TPE too for that matter
