You don't need to be an 'investor' to invest in Singletrack: 6 days left: 95% of target - Find out more
I'm currently living away from home at the moment and want to travel back home at weekends if the price is right.
Is there any app or anything that can tell me last minute deals which I can get a train and return?
The best prices are normally advance tickets, not last minute - as far as I've experienced.
(waits for someone to tell me otherwise)
What LG said, there is no such thing as last minute deals, only buying in advance will get you a deal, more than 3weeks prior to travel is the best pricing
Book in advance and split tickets.

The calculator isn't perfect, you can save even more by splitting train tickets when playing around with ticket booking websites. Just make sure you purchase all the split tickets on the same train, so check arrival and departure times.

I've heard of some ticket staff being a bit fussy about split tickets but supposedly they are within the rules as long as the train calls at the stations on the tickets.
Other than that, if you are eligible for a railcard, get one. If you are in a group sometimes you can get group tickets that are cheaper, but they often aren't advertised but ask at the ticket office.
The O2 trains app is quite user friendly and fast. Much better than thetrainline.com imo.
It seems that it's about 7 quid cheaper on average than driving, unless I go at 7 in the morning on a Saturday
Having glanced at some of the prices when searching for same day tickets advanced is the only way unless you happen to have a foreign address.

The journy is Peterborough to Sheffield if that helps.
